Grant Submissions Are Now Open for Burner Exchange and Legacy Grants Over the years, the Firefly Arts Collective (FAC) has been proud to provide grant support to Firefly artists to enable them to express and fulfill their varied creative visions. These grants are intended to support and promote radically-expressive, community-based, interactive and/or collaborative projects that help define and shape the creative core of the event. Art is a central part of Firefly, and the event wouldn't be the same without the wonderful pieces that have been brought to Vermont over the years. Bringing art is a great way to add a piece of yourself to the event and contribute/participate in a meaningful way. We are now accepting applications for Burner Exchange Grants and Legacy Grants. These grant categories are for art that ALREADY exists, and needs help to get to Firefly. Burner Exchange Grants Burner Exchange Grants are intended to fund projects that have already appeared at non-Firefly burns, and need minor repairs/improvements or funding for transportation. They are available for any funding level between $1 and $1000. *Seeking OODs! Priority application deadline 3/17* Do you enjoy being a responsible adult? If you have professional or volunteer experience as an emergency responder and want to know everything wacky that goes on behind the scenes for one full day of Firefly, OOD is the volunteer role for you! As OOD, you will be tasked with working with the Board Member On Call to solve any problems that happen on your shift. You will be asked to use your professional judgment to develop and execute solutions to many different problems, including the occasional emergency. *To be considered as an OOD for Firefly 2023, please fill out the OOD volunteer application <https://safety.fireflyartscollective.org/firefly-safety/ood_application.html> before March 17.* All applications received before 23:59 on March 17 will receive equal consideration! All OODs should be available to attend a full day training in Bethel, VT on 4/29. The training is designed to be highly practical and to prepare OOD and Board on Call volunteers to work together on shift at Firefly! Oryx will follow up with applicants via email over the week following March 17 to arrange a short phone interview. This phone call is the final step in the OOD application process. Everyone who applies by March 20 will be notified about whether they have been selected for a shift before March 31. Candidates are still encouraged to apply after March 20 and will be considered on a rolling basis until all shifts are filled. Thanks, and see you in the woods!! Call for 2023 Firefly Art Grant Reviewers

Interested in helping bring art to Firefly? Want to help choose what kind of projects are funded for the event? We've got a new round of grant applications coming in, which means we need another round of committee members! This is call out to any of you who might be interested in helping to review the proposals for Firefly's Art Grants this year! For each grant, we are looking for approx 12 folks who are interested in helping to make this aspect of Firefly successful. *Requirements:* - You must have attended at least 1 (one) previous Firefly in order to join and participate in the selection committee. - You must not be applying for a 2023 Firefly Art Grant. - You must sign the Art Grant Committee Code of Ethics. - Commit to reading and recording your thoughts on up to 20 applications, which may take 4-6 hours of brain time. - There are multiple blocks available; you can sign up for any number of blocks, but for each block you must attend both dates. *Available Blocks:* Temple Grant Meetings: - Thursday, Feb 16 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, Feb 23 at 7:30 PM Creativity (Early Application): - Thursday, Mar 9 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, Mar 16 at 7:30 PM Creativity (Second Round): - Thursday, Apr 6 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, Apr 13 at 7:30 PM Burner Exchange, Legacy: - Thursday, May 4 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, May 11 at 7:30 PM *The Intense Details:*The job requires a lot of reading and talking as we typically receive a number of applications for each grant. We will have 2 meetings in which we will make these decisions. These meetings generally run for about 2 hours, and will take place over Zoom. This is a commitment of about 8-12 hours; 6-8 hours of reading and cogitating and two 2-hour meetings where we hash it all out. You will have a few days between the deadline for submissions and the first meeting in order to read the applications over and fill out a review sheet to decide how well each application met the criteria. We review the applications for Thoughtfulness, Creativity, and Feasibility (explained in detail here and during the meetings). This is followed by the aforementioned meetings where we compare notes and formulate follow-up questions for all applicants. We wait a week to give time for artists to get their replies back to us, then we meet again and make our final decisions. Temple grant submissions are open

The Firefly 2023 Art Grants season has officially begun! The Temple Grant is accepting submissions starting today: Temple Grant: up to $2000 The Temple Grant supports the creation of the Temple at Firefly Arts Festival each year. The Temple aims to satisfy both civic and spiritual needs by creating a revered gathering space at Firefly. While the Temple should be spiritual in a general sense (and true to the spirit of the event), it is not intended to be a religious symbol, and overtly religious tones should be avoided. The Temple is placed in the field, and provides a space for Fireflies to seek quiet contemplation and introspection at the event. It is of the utmost importance that the Temple defines a physical (and emotional) space; that said, it does not have to be a traditional shelter or building. It is traditional for the Temple to serve as a place for participants to leave offerings, and the structure will be burned on the final evening of the event. Gathering new Firefly Communications volunteers

Had a great time at Firefly? Looking to get involved? Good at writing, web stuff, or organizing information? The Communications Committee could use a few more people to make sure our Fireflies and potential new Fireflies know what’s up and how to participate. We’re a small but pivotal group doing work throughout the year, but we’re not gonna lie, it gets a bit busy leading up to the event! Our job is to organize, design and publish all forms of Firefly Arts Collective’s outbound communication to our community, including: -the Glowbe email newsletter -other email announcements as needed -Updating Fireflyartscollective.org website (in Wordpress) -Facebook organization official Page (Moderating the Group page is a different, participant-driven effort) We’re looking for people who can: -Write clearly and amusingly -Organize information and project manage -Do graphic design for any needed page graphics, infographics, etc -Update Wordpress websites -Maintain Wordpress websites We meet online, and coordinate via email and Slack, for the most part. And, there is still space available if you want to contribute your own entertainment or shenanigans! Most of these events are not included in the WhoWhatWhen, so it's worth taking a look-see and noting ones you don't want to miss. The schedule will also be posted at the Stage. Saturday kicks off in the morning with a Yoga Practice and Stretch Therapy, Vintage Parlor Games, Muppet Zoology (yeah, you read that right), and WUBs (we're as mystified as you, just have to come see for yourself). Sunday has Comedic/Raunchy Songs accompanied by live instruments. ~ Stage Core Mx. Firefly Pageant Attention all self proclaimed beauty queens! Get hyped for the 2022 Mx. Firefly Pageant 3pm, Saturday hosted by Diode Music by the magnificent DJ Char What is the Mx Firefly Pageant? The Mx Firefly Pageant is your local inner beauty pageant!! Who can enter? Anyone! Gender is a construct! Bring a sash and declare yourself Mx“Something.” Expect to showcase a talent, participate in silly games, and answer questions. We will have a panel of fabulous judges who have very broad terms of what talent and beauty are, especially when they are being bribed. Not enough time before Firefly to make a sash? Come Perform or Safety for the Fire Conclave! Does having your fire spinning confined to just the camp spinning circles make you feel cramped? Do you wish to taunt the bug by dancing and toying with fire in front of it before it succumbs to its inevitable roasted fate? Or perhaps you desire to feel more like a master of the elements, commanding the flames themselves to ignite or disperse at your very whim and guarding those that would entertain us all? You can live out these wild pyro dreams if you come participate in the traditional conclave show for the bug burn this year! You are able to bask in the spectacle spinning fire for the screaming crowd OR as the ever important and VERY necessary fire safety, the last line of defense against stray flames! Those interested MUST attend ONE of the two safety meetings that will occur during the week. These meetings will be held at the Lions fire spinning circle at 5pm. One is on Thursday (June 30th) and the other is on Friday (July 1st). These will be brief but important safety meetings that will allow the conclave crew to meet you all face to face, get an accurate head count for both roles, figure out the props everyone will be using AND go over the important conclave procedures and get everyone on the same page for the burn plan. Spread the word to your friends! Anyone that does not attend at least ONE of these meetings will NOT be allowed to perform or safety on the night of the bug burn, unfortunately, so keep an eye on the time those days! Never safetied a fire performer before? Need a refresher? No problem, we’ve got you covered! Just let us know at the meeting and we will gladly closely train you with a demo and give you practical experience in putting out props so that you can be comfortable on burn night. It’s a great skill to have not just for this conclave, but for any burn you attend in the future where performers might need you! Shifts for being a safety volunteer are currently open in the Firefly Volunteer System, so go and sign up before they are filled! Besides spinning one-by-one before the bug ignites, there will also be a small choreographed performance to kick things off! This year the Firefly Rangers will be led by myself and Aster Treitman, with the support of returning Rangers. The Rangers can be found circulating throughout the event in pairs with Firefly logoed t-shirts, a laminate, and carrying radios as the eyes and ears of the community, available to help facilitate issues, concerns, or information that participants may need. Ranger are based out of their headquarters located at the intersection of Mercurial Way and Verdant Ave where participants can walk up and check in with the shift lead as well, and there will be a burn barrel going at night as a comfort station. Although the Rangers page has information from 2019, We just had our first training last week to test out the new in person and Zoom Call training, and things went well with that. There are two more trainings coming up, so we are looking forward to having returning Rangers, those who have Rangered at Burning Man or other Regionals, and folks who are interested in volunteering with the department. Firefly 2022 Sound Core Announcement

Hello Fireflies, This is the annual Sound Core memo to anyone who intends to make noise at Firefly this year. As an annual event, Firefly needs to keep the neighborhood happy and complaints to a minimum to guarantee we are welcome back next year. Happy neighbors are kept happy by working to ensure they are minimally bothered by noise pollution. Noise pollution is minimized through everyone’s collective effort to make sure they aren’t blasting music so loudly that someone complains, or calls the police. Thus, it is necessary to have a sound plan and people responsible for the sound in each camp. It only takes one person to cause major issues not just to a single camp, but the event as a whole. If a camp continues to operate the PA too loud or disregard policies, the issue will be directly raised to the board who will decide the appropriate action to be taken (this puts your placement at risk for next year, and could even result in your camp’s ejection from this year’s Firefly). Soundcore members are volunteers trying to help the event happen, not camp babysitters. If you are a Firefly attendee and you feel a soundcamp is being exceedingly or needlessly loud, please bring this to the attention of a member of Soundcore (Kevin Green / Sean Hensley, other Soundcore volunteers), a Firefly Ranger, or a Board member. This needs to be an effort everyone precipitates in – one Soundcamp (or even one person) misbehaving affects everyone. If noise complaints occur this year we may have to even further regulate sound levels next year so we can return for 2023. This could mean no subwoofers in the evening or even no sound late at night. This happened to PDF at their old location. In order to be fair to everyone, if an external sound complaint is received – All camps will need to turn down or even cease amplified music. Depending on the severity of the complaint and/or how pissed the state police are, it could be for the evening or the rest of the event. Ideally we do not fuck up in the first place. <3 It is a delicate balance to try to minimize the sound levels emanating from Firefly given the constraints of our location along with being fair to everyone. We are not trying to rain on your parade- we simply seek that sweet spot where it’s loud enough for the burners to enjoy, and quiet enough not to bother the regular folks in the area. Meeting this target provides the best outcome for everyone involved. Thank you for your cooperation. New Leadership Kevin from Camp Live Free and Burn is leading Sound Core this year, supported by Sean Hensley. We are both new to Firefly, and working hard to carry the torch that’s been passed to us from previous years. No Sound Core members from previous years will be attending this year, but Dennis Zografos has been instrumental in providing email support and transporting Sound Core gear to site. In Nick Binary's absence, there will be no compass-directionality for what direction to point your speakers. We ask that everyone direct their sound somewhere between West and Southwest, it’s an approximation of what was done in previous years but it’s the best we can do for the moment. What Constitutes a Sound Camp? Any camp or installation that plans on having music as one of the main focuses of their camp or art, you have speakers capable of 50W or more, or weighing 15lbs or more. If any of these criteria describe you, you are a sound camp, and are required to attend the Sound Core meeting. If you have a simple bluetooth speaker or a small art installation, you’re fine, just please point the sound westward. Each Sound Camp must designate one member of their camp to be the ‘Sound Camp Representative’. Figure out who’s going to be the rep for your camp in advance, please. This person will be loaned a SPL meter and will be in charge of their camp’s overall volume levels for the duration of Firefly. Current Sound camps that I am aware of are as follows- Astral Chill Bring A Cup Cabana Hammock Camp Here Camp Love and Lions Den Camp Stop Hitting Yourself Diode F-Art Ginnungagap GraVT Howl Live Free and Burn Meat Camp Secret Goth Club Sensual Sensory Experience If you’re not on this list, you’re not in the 2022 Sound Camp Directory and should reach out to Carl G over in Placement Core. Sound Core Briefing Thursday at 4pm there will be a Sound Core Meeting at Diode, which must be attended by each camp’s ‘Sound Camp Representative’. Soundcore will distribute SPL meters to each Camp Representative at this time, and given a quick overview of how they work and an index card with instructions and maximum permitted volume levels. Sound Core is composed of two volunteers this year, and the rangers have more responsibility this year than in past years, so in keeping with the principle of radical self-reliance, each camp is responsible for monitoring their volume levels. We also ask sound camps with moderate or large sound systems to help monitor sound levels of their neighboring camps. Reasonable Volume What is reasonable volume? Please use your critical thinking skills to answer the following questions: - Do you need to run your PA at high volume with a few people on your dance floor / at camp? - Do people really need to shout to each other standing a few feet away from your speakers? - Is doing any of these things really necessary or adding in any positive way to your camp/event? Soundcore recommends and enforces a ‘Don’t be stupid’ policy. One person being stupid can jeopardize the entire event. Please don’t be that person. Maximum Volume Levels for the event are 85-94 SPL-A at source. The maximum volume is a range and not a single number, because sound propagation is heavily dependent on the environment. Sound travels a lot further if it’s cold, less so if it’s a hot day. Additionally, if it’s muggy or everything is covered in dew/rainwater, that water is going to absorb sound and you can be a bit louder. So again- cold, dry day? 85 SPL-A. Hot, wet day? 94 SPL-A. Please use your judgment (or reach out to Sound Core or the Rangers) for determining the precise limit for the day. Sound core and Rangers have SPL meters, and your Sound Camp representative might also have one, if there was a surplus to loan out. SPL meters are also easy to install as a free app on your phone. They may not be quite as reliable or accurate as a real, dedicated device, but they’re a whole lot better than a wild guess. Please be respectful of others when it comes to your sound. The word on the street is that in past years, there have been multiple instances of people walking around at 7AM blasting their speakers into camps or aiming them at people who are sleeping, and excusing themselves by saying “it’s for art.” If you want to get ‘creative’ about being an asshole, we can creatively confiscate your gear or artistically escort you off site. This Year’s Schedule Remember- Amplified sound is dependent on everyone complying with the sound policies.This schedule is subject to change if we get noise complaints. Responsibility for monitoring each camp’s volume falls to each Camp’s Sound Core Representative. Tuesday (Early Arrival)- No PA amplified sound please. Low level Bluetooth/Handheld speakers are ok until sundown. Wednesday- No PA systems. Handheld Bluetooth speakers are OK all day/night - except in quiet camping and anywhere in the field area. Anything that has a carry handle is not a small handheld speaker. Thursday- Starting at 10am PA’s can be on at reasonable volume. Subwoofers can come on at 11am. Music can go until 11pm, then turn all PA’s off for the night. Again, small bluetooth speakers are okay. Friday/Saturday/Sunday- Starting at 10am PA’s can be on at reasonable volume. Music can go until 11pm, then lower levels to under 90 SPL, and dip your subwoofer levels. Monday (Exodus)- PA amplified sound is allowed until 12pm. The event officially ends at noon, after which, low level/Bluetooth speakers are allowed for the remainder of your load-out. No drum circles, poofer fire art, or any other surprises that generate shockwaves during the late night or early morning - please save that stuff for 10AM-11PM Quiet Camping Firefly will have quiet camping zones which will be reflected on the map. The Back Forty (Northwest of the stone wall and east of the stream) are quiet camping areas. If you are looking for quiet camping, please camp here and not west of Verdant ave which will be quite loud. That is where the cluster of sound camps are normally placed. Quiet camping is usually reflected on the map. We ask that no amplified sound or generator use take place after 11pm in these areas. There are volunteers who work shifts at all hours for Rangers, First Aid, etc. who rely on having a quiet place to catch a few hours of sleep, so please be respectful. This weekend, and active songbird's nest was found on Verdant Path; literally *in* the path! As with years past: we're required to create a 50-foot perimeter around the nest and avoid traffic within this perimeter. This means Verdant near Meat Camp is closed to pedestrian, Polaris, and vehicle traffic, and the perimeter around the birds’ nest is closed to camping, art, and other human activities. (The closed area is marked with an orange fence and caution tape) Two camps are primarily affected, were immediately put in touch with Placement Core and, with the help of a friendly chainsaw, we have been working to re-place these camps with the help of some wonderful neighbors. If you were planning on using the closed section of Verdant to bring gear or campmates in and out of the woods, make sure to take the time now to make new plans for how you will reroute your traffic or new means of hauling gear and art in and out. If you have questions about how this affects placement of your camp or art, or if you might have extra space to provide for the displaced camps and art, please contact placement(a)fireflyartscollective.org. This is a nice reminder that we are guests in the woods, and a lot of critters still call this place their home.
