FIREFLY NEWSLETTER:V1:#1:04.21.05 ************************************* ----------TABLE OF CONTENTS---------- ************************************* FIREFLY CALL FOR ORGANIZERS AND VOLUNTEERS FIRST OPEN MEETING: MONDAY, APRIL 25 CALL FOR ART, ART INSTALLATIONS, AND WORKSHOPS THEME CAMPS DATES AND TICKETING CALL FOR TICKET ART MAKE CONTACT GETTING OFF AND ON THIS LIST *************** FIREFLY *************** Firefly is a participatory event taking place July 1-4 in the wilds of Vermont. It is a celebration of creativity, community, and fire. There are many ways to be involved in Firefly and all are equally important. This newsletter emphasizes volunteering, an area that is less flashy than other forms of participation, but is truly the exoskeleton of our insect. ********************************** CALL FOR ORGANIZERS AND VOLUNTEERS ********************************** Firefly exists because so many people contribute their skills and time - people like you! The event doesn't happen without everyone getting involved in some way. There are two main ways you can volunteer: as an organizer or as a pure volunteer. An organizer creates structure and delegates roles to volunteers both before and during the event. A volunteer has more flexibility and can decide on the amount of time and effort contributed by choosing an appropriate role. Volunteers can be pre-event (at work weekends or as a member of an organizational committee), during the event (as a greeter, DPW, shuttle driver, ranger, kitchen poobah, or coffee minder), or post-event (clean-up). The ways you can get involved in volunteering are limited only by your own imagination. If you would like to get involved or think of something you would like to do that isn't mentioned, contact John at firefly-volunteer@chaoshacker.org. Make sure you come to the open meeting next week! There are a few areas where we are looking for organizers: Food In the past Firefly has provided food to participants. We would like to do so again. If you can organize and run the kitchen for the weekend or a meal, please get in touch. Work Weekend The work weekend organizer coordinates the weekend volunteers and trains them in conjunction with the DPW in order to prepare the land for the event. Performance There are people who want to perform at Firefly and we need someone to schedule them and be a liaison, as well as supervise the sound and stage setup. Coffee Wouldn't it be sweet to have a cup of hot coffee at 2am? A coffee (or tea) lover is needed to organize and run the Firefly Coffee Cart (FCC). An introduction to some more volunteer opportunities: Greeters Be a greeter at Firefly! A greeter introduces participants to Firefly with information and good will. It is fun! If you are interested in being a greeter or in driving the shuttle (from the parking lot to the event proper) please contact Katie at firefly-greeter@chaoshacker.org . You will be put on a list and contacted when a sign-up sheet is set up. Thanks! Rangers Rangers are mediators and facilitators, and keep an eye out for the safety of our participants. If you like to help people, and guide new participants in the Firefly culture, contact Ben at firefly-rangers@chaoshacker.org. We are especially looking for participants from last year who are already familiar with the land, and people with extensive fire safety experience. Trails and music stage deco and illumination In 2003 and 2004 we had performance and dance areas elaborately set up with intelligent lighting, lasers, video and more. This year, help us make dancing in the woods an even more magical experience! There are also trails in the woods that need to be illuminated to make navigating them safe for everyone, and decorated with your art to add to the surreal beauty of the event. Contact Leonid at firefly-lighting@chaoshacker.org if you want to help. Work weekends There is work to do to prepare our site for Firefly, clearing brush, scouting locations and building useful infrastructure. We go up to the site for a weekend to camp out, work together, and play with power tools. Last year we built outhouses and a well. The dates will be announced soon. Contact Cris at firefly-work@chaoshacker.org if you want to help. ************************************* FIRST OPEN MEETING - MONDAY, APRIL 25 ************************************* Firefly needs you!
