1. Ticketing/Parking Pass Purchase & Refund Deadline: 6/30 (Sunday) @ 10:00 AM
Please look at your plans and return your ticket if you are not coming to Firefly! There are still people on the waitlist hoping for a ticket. You can get a refund on purchased tickets/parking passes up until this deadline.
Additionally, please purchase your parking pass now HERE <https://tickets.fireflyartscollective.org/ticketsale.php?view=Parking>. Parking tickets are $30 online with a credit card. Parking passes will be $40, cash only, at the gate.
Contact tickets(a)fireflyartscollective.org with any questions.
2. Chainsaws
A reminder that the only people allowed to use a chainsaw at Firefly are individuals who have been cleared by DPW. Firefly retains the services of a local forester to assess the site for safety. Based on his recommendations hazardous trees are felled for the DPW to cut up during the work weekends.
Participants are not permitted to fell trees, live or dead. If you feel that there is a tree hazard in your area, notify the DPW. Our options are limited during the event and the most practical solution will likely be to stay away from it.

3. Supporting our Friends Through the Week
The temple burn can be an emotional time for many of us for various reasons, whether we have gone to release something we've been holding onto, to say goodbye to a loved one, or are somebody who can be overstimulated easily.
As many of us are saying goodbye to somebody who we loved this year, Sanctuary wants to make sure that everybody has support if wanted.
We have added one extra person per shift through Sunday this year in hopes that if somebody seeks support outside of their immediate friend group for whatever reason, it is there. In order to make sure that we meet the need/wants/expectations, we need wonderful and supportive people to take those extra shifts.
If you are a sanctuary volunteer, or were somebody who was discouraged by the shifts filling so quickly, this is your chance to snag a shift at a time where it might be needed the most.
Gifting is so important in this community and support is one of the most important gifts you can give somebody.
You can sign up for any shifts here: https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/team/219 <https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/team/219>
Thank you beautiful fireflies for all that you do!
4. Stage, now with more radical self reliance!
Hi everyone! We're trying something new this year with the audio system at the Firefly Stage (located next to medical and ranger HQ). This year we're simplifying the audio system so that everyone will be able to run sound for their own stage slot. Yay radical self reliance! Don't worry though we're not just going to throw you to the bears.
If you want amplified sound for your stage slot come down to Art Support Kamp (A.S.K.) next to the stage anytime Tuesday – Saturday between 10am and 4pm and we'll show you the ropes. It'll only take 15-30 minutes and you'll have a new skill! For those of you who are interested, we'll be using a Makie DFX-6 mixer. I promise it's easier to use than you think.

*If you want sound for your stage slot you MUST get checked out at A.S.K. first!*
We also ask that everyone review "A letter from Sound Core" <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/news/letter-soundcore-fireflies/>
If anyone is unable or particularly uncomfortable running their own sound please email stage(a)fireflyartscollective.org or reach out to Spencer or Matt (Spider Monkey) camped at A.S.K. during the event and there's a good chance we'll be able to schedule someone to be there.
Thanks for your cooperation and a big Thank you from your Friendly Neighborhood Sound Guys™ who greatly appreciate the opportunity this gives them to see the rest of Firefly beyond the stage!
Spencer, Stage Co-lead, Stage(a)fireflyartscollective.org <mailto:Stage@fireflyartscollective.org>
5. Feeling tired? Do you need a boost before your next shift?
Come and get a cup of coffee at Firefly's Coffee Kitchen! Check on your volunteer shifts or sign up for more shifts at the Gnome hut next door. Meet fellow caffiends or just hang and enjoy the view. Coffee, Tea, Hot chocolate and EmergenC are available.
Email coffee(a)fireflyartscollective.org if you have any questions!
Hello Fireflies,
The following is a friendly letter from Soundcore going into detail about the state of amplified sound for this Firefly.
If you just want a concise list of this year's rules in black and white along with when amplified sound is permitted, please skip down to "TL;DR - By the Numbers".
Sound mitigation is important again this year due to where the 4th lands with workdays for the surrounding neighbors, and we'll therefore operate by the same schedule. We likely have new neighbors this year that have not experienced how loud Firefly is for the surrounding area.
Reasonable Volume
What is reasonable volume? Do you need to run your PA at stupid loud% (12) with a few people on your dance floor / at camp? Do people really need to shout to each other standing a few feet away from your speakers? Is doing any of these things really necessary or adding in any positive way to your camp/event?
Soundcore recommends and enforces a 'Don't be stupid' policy. One person being stupid can jeopardize the entire event. So don't be stupid or "that person." We have a few additional sound camps this year and need everyone's help with this. Folks from Soundcore will be making rounds throughout the event. Please, no poofer fire art or amplified sound in the fields in the evenings of the event. The back forty is quiet camping only - no amplified sound!
We Need to Do Better
Last year was a bit rough, we did much better in 2017. Camps weren't really monitoring each other, the Soundcore briefing was lightly attended, we received multiple complaints mainly surrounding the same few camps. We were belligerently asked "what happens if I don't turn it down?", were ignored, and multiple visits to the same camps were made on multiple nights; mostly to Lions and Midnight Poutine - both of whom have apologized and submitted very concise plans to keep this from occurring again this year. This shows the importance of having a sound plan and people responsible for the sound in each camp, one person can cause major issues not just to a single camp, but the event as a whole.
Due to this we have to take a somewhat different approach this year. To do this we need everyone's help and participation. One thing that may need some clarification is that Soundcore only monitors sound levels and makes recommendations to keep amplified sound possible at Firefly, we do not enforce policies past making verbal requests. This year each sound camp will receive a Soundcore tag, much like fire safety core with fire art. This tag will be handed out at the Soundcore meeting for the camp to attach to their PA to show you actually attended the meeting and were briefed about the issues with introducing additional noise to Bethel. SPL meters will also be handed out to the larger sound camps at the meeting. During the event, if sound policies are disregarded, a member of the board or their designate may remove the tag and this sound system can no longer be operated. If a camp continues to operate the PA or disregard policies, the issue will be directly raised to the board who will decide the appropriate action to be taken (this puts your placement at risk for next year, and we've even been told this could result in your camp's ejection from this year's Firefly). Soundcore members are volunteers trying to help the event happen, not babysit camps.
Sound Camps
What constitutes a sound camp? Any camp or installation that plans on having music as one of the main focuses of their camp or art, you have speakers capable of 50W or more, or weighing 15lbs or more. If any of these criteria describe you, you are a sound camp, and are required to join Soundcore and receive a Soundcore tag. If you have a simple bluetooth speaker or a small art installation, you're fine, just please point the sound westward.
New Leadership
Dr. Claw from Bring-a-Cup will be co-leading Soundcore with (Nick Binary) this year and helping with some of the more difficult camps from last year.
The Plea:
Firefly is held in very close proximity to neighbors that don't enjoy the techno as much as the bears do. This also includes any fire art that generates shockwaves (poofers). Because of this we ask that no fire art or amplified sound in the fields in the evenings of the event. We are not the only regional burn to face these issues and try to mitigate them, PDF has a great sound policy write-up: http://playadelfuego.org/sound-policy <http://playadelfuego.org/sound-policy>
As firefly grows it's easy to get caught up in our small temporary world for the week, and lose perspective that there are folks who live here for the other 51 weeks in the year. Most of these folks view our event simply as noise pollution. It has always been a delicate balance to try to minimize the sound levels emanating from Firefly given the constraints of our location along with being fair to everyone.
That said this year we are asking for no PA amplified sound on Tuesday - Low level setup music is totally fine until dark on a bluetooth speaker or small DJ monitor. Wednesday music can go till 11pm - at moderate volume please. After this time, turn off your PA and please no drum circles/etc. Small bluetooth speakers are completely fine during any of these times - unless you're in quiet camping. (Soundboks units do not count as small bluetooth speakers) Again please remember the /do /not /be /stupid policy.
In order to be fair to everyone, if an external sound complaint is received - All camps will need to turn down or even cease amplified music. Depending on the severity of the complaint and/or how pissed the state police are, it could be for the evening or the rest of the event. Ideally we do not fuck up in the first place.
Please only run your sound systems as needed - if your dance floor is mostly empty, do you really need to be running your sound near it's maximum output? This is just wasting fuel, likely upsetting your Firefly neighbors and putting the event at risk for everyone else. Bonus! If your sound system has a limiter, please use it! Ideally we do not want anyone going over 85-94 SPL-A (temperature dependent). Inform your DJs on this! Even better, post a sign by the DJ mixer or keep a dodgeball / large stick handy!
As we needed to last year, we again need to operate at lower volume in the whee hours, from 1am onward from Friday - Sunday please lower the sound level a bit and dip down the subwoofer level. This is also true if we have some very cold nights. Sound carries further, so please keep this in mind and adjust your volume accordingly. There will be a temperature and humidity monitor in the tech tent at Diode, find Nick Binary or Dr. Claw and they will show you where it is. Please do not operate any fire art that generates shockwaves during this early morning time as well.
Firefly will have quiet camping zones which will be reflected on the map. Northwest of the stone wall (back forty area), and east of the stream are considered quiet camping areas this year (We ask that no amplified sound or generator use take place each night in these areas). If you are looking for quiet camping, please camp here and not west of Verdant ave which will be quite loud. That is where the cluster of sound camps are normally placed.
If you feel the need to walk around pointing a speaker at folks trying to sleep at 7 in the morning for your 'art' - Don't. It just pisses people off. Especially if in a quiet camping area. You'll likely get your toy taken away. (This has happened more then once).
If you are a Firefly attendee and you feel a soundcamp is being exceedingly or needlessly loud, please bring this to the attention of a member of Soundcore (Nick Binary / Dr Claw, other Soundcore volunteers), a Firefly Ranger, or a Board member.
This needs to be an effort everyone precipitates in - one Soundcamp / peoples misbehaving affects everyone.
If noise complaints occur this year we may have to even further regulate sound levels next year so we can return for 2020. This could mean no subwoofers in the evening or even no sound late at night. This happened to PDF at their old location.
We ask sound camps with moderate or large sound systems to help monitor sound levels of their neighboring camps. Soundcore will provide SPL meters for use during the event that will be handed out at the Soundcore meeting. The idea here is to bring more people into actively monitoring our sound levels, as to not just fall on the few Soundcore volunteers. Each camp will appoint one or more people who will be part of Soundcore for the weekend. These people will be monitoring other camps in addition to their own. This entails checking in on the assigned camp every few hours. If you are adamantly opposed to this; please email soundcore -at - fireflyartscollective.org <http://fireflyartscollective.org/> and maybe we'll figure something out.
Soundcore will have a meeting at Diode at 4pm Wednesday to discuss what this entails and to hand out loaner SPL meters.
Additionally, for all Sound Camps, please bring a compass and refer to the specified headings below for your camp and point all sound sources in this direction. If you do not have a compass, find a Soundcore member during setup and we can help you out with locating the correct direction to point your audible probable cause makers. Note these have changed from last year to try to further avoid a residential area. Compass headings have been written on your placement foam plates that are hung in most theme campsites. Some camps have much larger sound setups than others, but it all adds up. Please be respectful and fair to all but following the specified headings.
TL;DR - By the Numbers:
Rule Zero: Do not do anything that will force us to make more rules.
1. What? - Regulated Sound Sources:
Speakers and PAs of all sizes and varieties, from handheld to truckload.
All PA systems, while in use, are required to display a Soundcore tag from 4pm Weds through the end of the event.

heading. Please bring a compass. A short tutorial on finding headings can
be found here: http://www.compassdude.com/compass-reading.shtml <http://www.compassdude.com/compass-reading.shtml> - Remember,
the Firefly map is not situated with north on the top of the map - it's west.

(possibly as high as 94dB). Please check in at Diode that night to verify.
We'll have temperature and humidity readouts available for this purpose.
4. Sound Camps - Additional Responsibilities:
In addition to the above, Sound Camps with moderate to large sound systems

Ten Principles: Participation and Civic Responsibility
1. Volunteer! As of this morning, 663 Ticket Holders have yet to Volunteer for Anything
We have lots of open volunteering spots! So many that it is a bit questionable whether we can even run the event. What? Does half of the event think this is some music festival with paid staff?
Exodus is becoming unprecedentedly long and complicated and is very clearly because of gaps in volunteer shifts. Some participants volunteer for 2, 3, or even 8 shifts — some shifts are 4 hours and some shifts 24 hours (e.g. first aid). Fill empty shifts and let's try to help those people out. Burnout is a real thing.
If you haven't signed up yet, know that we expect every Firefly to take at least one volunteer shift, even better, take two! Go here to volunteer: https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/ <https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/>
2. New Shifts Available
Ticketing has removed some of the people who are far down the wait list from holding volunteer shifts (sorry!) which opened up a bunch of spaces.
If you wanted that perfect volunteer shift, go check to see if it is available! Go here to volunteer: https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/ <https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/>
3. GLITCH: Check your midnight shifts and make sure you have correct day
We found a glitch where sign up for shifts that start between midnight and 5am were showing on *the wrong day*. We fixed the glitch
GO MAKE SURE YOU SIGNED UP FOR THE RIGHT DAY!!!
Go here to check your midnight shifts: https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/ <https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/>
4. Exodus: Help Wanted, Flexibility Offered!
Hi all! Many cores – especially Parking and Parking Shuttle – need more hands for Exodus! We ONLY have four volunteers so far for Parking during Exodus (we need 18 more).
This year we’re offering a great benefit: If you work an Exodus shift, you do not need to be off the land until 6 PM or, if shifts go late, 2 hours AFTER you get off your shift.
Please help make Exodus smooth for your fellow participants, and look forward to sailing out of the parking lots with no traffic! Go here to volunteer: https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/ <https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/>
Contact exodus(a)fireflyartscollective.org with any questions.
5. Ten Principles: Participation and Civic Responsibility
Firefly is run by the participants. If you have a ticket, that means you are a participant. Civic Responsibility is also an important part of our culture.
Volunteering to make the event run is a radical act of participation — every person you see at Firefly working as parking, Rangers, or even writing this email are unpaid volunteers who are actively participating in our Firefly Community.
Read this page <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/what-is-firefly/10-principles/> and learn about our Ten Principles and how Participation and Civic Responsibility are a huge part of it.

Parking during Exodus Really Needs Help
We ONLY have four volunteers so far for Parking during Exodus (we need 18 more).
There's always a lot of complaints about how hard leaving the event is, and not having Parking volunteers impacts that. Being short volunteers also overwhelms and over works the volunteers that do step up during Exodus and causes burn out.
PERK: If you work an Exodus shift, you do not need to be off the land until 6 PM or, if shifts go late, 2 hours AFTER you get off your shift. Why rush to leave on Sunday, when instead, you can take your time and then help Exodus flow like room temperature butter.

Fire Art Registration
Calling all fire artists! If you are planning to bring fire art to Firefly, you must fill out the form linked below. This form is necessary to run or burn any fire art and allows Fire Core/FAST to plan for the event.
Flame effects and any burnable art are considered fire art for this purpose. Firefly Fire Art Registration Form <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeARpsVRzo8_g_HJm8imqTQ9xaOSBcuuHr…>
While fire spinning is also a form of fire art, it does not need anything sent prior to the event. If you wish to spin in the Conclave, there are organized meetings at Firefly you must attend. See the What/Where/When <https://ffeventguide.herokuapp.com/>for times and locations for Conclave Meetings to spin at the Conclave before the Bug Burn.

Temple Perimeter Needs Volunteers!
Hello Fireflies, do you care about temple and want to help it happen? We need volunteers for the temple burn perimeter!
Specifically we need folks to come to the perimeter training at 4pm Saturday (it's in the WhatWhereWhen if you forget when, what, or where), then be part of temple perimeter while the temple burns.

3. Off Site Parking: A Dream Come True .+:。(ノ・ω・)ノ
Firefly has grown from a smol lil forest romp to the truly amazing and growing community we have today. How do we do it when our land space is limited? The answer is that Fireflies are truly awesome people who take a little extra time to park off site and ensure our event can continue to exist at its current size.
This year, offsite parkers have more to look forward to than an awesome shuttle ride and that great feeling you get from participating in the community: one free trash bag AND one free recycling bag! That’s right: Every car who parks off site will be given a special trash & recycling bag, which you’ll deposit with the Parking team upon Exodus. ٩(●ᴗ●)۶

4. Volunteers Needed for On-Call Logistical Sanctuary Roles
Firefly is the amazing event it is because of the innumerable ways people contribute their time, small and large, and we Sanctuary Co-Leads are so grateful for all of you signed up for shifts. I've heard quite a few people say a Sanctuary volunteer "saved my Firefly experience", or even "saved me".
To provide support for those volunteers, Sanctuary has the Logistics Supervisor role, but 11 of those shifts are not filled, and we need your help finding people for them. We hope you'll reach out to a friend who might be interested, perhaps that friend who loves helping behind the scenes but thought Sanctuary roles were only about supportive listening.
Logistics Supervisors will:
Assist other Sanctuary volunteers who have questions about policies and resources (the Co-Leads will train Logistics Supervisors to be able to do this).
Shifts are 12hrs wandering on-call; they should not expect to be working that whole time, but rather to be called in 1 - 3 times. If they go to sleep they will set their radio to a channel that is only used when someone needs to be woken up.
Attend the Volunteer Core Leads meeting that happens daily at 1 PM, and get to see how Firefly is run behind the scenes.
Optional: If a Logistics Supervisor wants to offer their support to Sanctuary visitors, they can tell the volunteers on Support Shifts to offer this.
We are also still looking to fill 10 Subject Matter Expert shifts, and we are 8 shifts short from having the ideal of 2+ people on each 4hr Support shift. For more information on those roles or anything else about Sanctuary you can visit here. <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/participate/join-a-core/sanctuary/> If you don't find the answer there please email us at sanctuary(a)fireflyartscollective.org
All the best, Sanctuary Co-Leads 2019
5. No Diapers in the Portos
In the interest of avoiding a repeat of last year's unpleasantness, please be advised that DIAPERS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE PORTOS.
If you or some member of your camp uses diapers, you are required to remove them from the property yourself. It should be common knowledge to anyone who attends an overnight festival that the only items that go into the portos are single-ply toilet paper and anything that has made the one way journey through your body. Exceptions can be made for vomiting, but I wouldn't recommend putting your head in there. Buckets with lids are available at Home Depot.
More graphic explanations are available from the Firefly DPW at dpw(a)fireflyartscollective.com.
6. Firefly Temple Etiquette
Fireflies often leave objects and tokens in the temple, symbols or possessions of the past and of future intentions. Objects in the temple should be left undisturbed. The Temple Burn is a solemn and quiet event.
7. Check Out the Open Stage Schedule and ADD Your Own Awesomeness!
Firefly's Open Stage, for everyone to use, is shaping up with some great events. AND, there is still space for yours!!! Some of the events so far, include…Rocky Horror, Yoga, Burlesque, Dance, Poetry, Films, Music, Training…

At Firefly this year, we'll again be coordinating an on-site version of an event we've been holding every month in Camberville: POWERPOINT CLUB!
Inspired by a Buzzfeed article, PowerPoint Club is an event where attendees give THREE MINUTE presentations on any topic they are passionate about. Three minutes is NOT a long time! It's super fun to try to convey everything you want in that amount of time, and nobody gets bored, unlike 99% of all PowerPoint presentations. It grasps your attention and is lots of fun. It's great for people who are afraid of public speaking because nobody expects it to be polished or anything.
Want to present? SIGN UP HERE: http://bit.ly/pptfirefly <http://bit.ly/pptfirefly>
WHEN/WHERE?
Lions Stage, 9pm Wednesday night (July 3). Thanks to the Lions for hosting!
THE RULES
Presentations will be three minutes long, plus an additional two minutes for Q&A and anything else. We will keep to this schedule within one SECOND.
Presentations can be anything you are passionate about.
You must upload your PowerPoint at http://bit.ly/pptffupload no later than SATURDAY, JUNE 29 in either PPT or PDF format. Or you can use poster board instead of PowerPoint. Or you can choose to have no materials at all and just talk at us.
You must sign up at http://bit.ly/pptfirefly to present. You don't need a topic yet. If we get more than 20 responses there will be a waitlist. We will also have some prior presentations on hand if you want to present someone else's slides which is usually hilarious fun.

1. Fire Spinning Circles at Firefly
Hello all fire spinners and camps who want to have a spinning circle!
It doesn't matter if your camp has had a spinning circle in previous years or if your camp has never had one, you need to contact Bendy at bendy(a)fireflyartscollective.org <mailto:bendy@fireflyartscollective.org> (or talk to me in person) to have your spinning circle approved.
Thanks,
Bendy (Safety Cluster lead & Co-lead of Fire)

2. Support the Local Economy
During the Work Weekends and the actual event, remember to support the local economy by making purchases in Bethel and remember to mention that you are with Firefly.
In a time when other regionals have struggled to find location to have their event, Firefly has been on the same site since 2009. We have have very good relations with our host town and hope to remain in Bethel for many more years.

3. Carpool: Request or Offer a Ride
Drivers, please be sure you are offering all available spaces in your car! Everyone must pull together to rideshare whenever possible, since we are so tight on parking spaces.
Go to our page at Ricky Rides <http://www.rickyrides.com/firefly-arts-collective> to offer or ask for a ride!
Easy Ricky Rides instructions are here. <http://www.rickyrides.com/instructions> Contact transport <mailto:transport@fireflyartscollective.org> if you have questions or for more details.
4. Gnome Open Shifts Added, Gnomes are Hawt!
Hello Gnomes and Gnome Wanna-bees!
We have added Gnome Shifts on Sunday to support GTFO.
If you are on the LNT team and will be looking to "generally help out things" on Sunday after packing up, Gnoming during GTFO would be a HUGE help. Or, if you are interested in joining the people who stick around after everyone skedaddles, this is a fine way to do it. Please consider Gnome shifts to support GTFO. Those guys get a T-shirt, but you get a sweet hat. It is also possible that at that time, GTFO and LNT will be smooth as silk and Gnomes can chill.
In related news, there could be a few extra gnomes during the "Burn" of the bug on Friday or the Temple on Saturday, please consider. If the shift is full and you really want to do it, contact Gnomes and you will be added!
Gnome! Is by far the most unique volunteer aspect of Firefly. Be unique with us! (no irony here, look away naysayers) Get the hawt hat! Contact at: gnomes(a)fireflyartscollective.org <mailto:gnomes@fireflyartscollective.org>
5. Do you love coffee?
Coffee Kitchen is seeking a third co-lead to learn how the process works and to help manage volunteers during the event. Help us caffeinate Firefly and keep all volunteers awake and happy!
For more information please email: coffee(a)fireflyartscollective.org
6. We still need Transport Co-Leads
Before Event—Assists with finding and training on-board bus volunteers for all bus trips, communications (emails), logistics and perks (bus locations, detours, etc.)
During Event—Meet and board busses when they arrive at the event, assist busses with turning around, answer passenger questions about the bus (schedule, perks, exodus), collects materials from on-board bus coordinators.
Exodus—Checks in passengers, coordinates staging area for luggage, makes sure passengers load gear onto trucks and busses in a timely manner, makes sure busses leave on time.
Email: transport(a)fireflyartscollective.org if you’re interested in the above position.
Placement Brunch is this Sunday!
Art and Theme Camp Placement applications are due this WEDNESDAY!
This is a reminder, you have just 2 days remaining to submit your Placement forms for any Art or Theme Camp that you want to reserve space for (or have listed on the event map). We've only received about half of the expected number of entries so far, so some of you should stop procrastinating :-)
Here's the link to the Placement Application questionnaire. <https://forms.gle/eTJKHj5YnWxBGPyF7>
Placement Brunch is at Noon next Sunday, June 9 at the Firefly site. We need your placement representative's contact info to send out directions. They also need to register (under their name) to attend Placement in advance through the Work Weekend signup here. <https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/team/220>
If you have special placement needs not covered by the form, or have other placement-related concerns, please email placement(a)fireflyartscollective.org
