Last Call for Legacy Grants, Burner Exchange Grants, and Skillshare Grants
Call for New FAC Board Members
Registration for SFTY3rd is now open to all Volunteers
Art Grants: Last Call for Legacy, Burner Exchange, and Skillshare grants!
The last round of major grants closes at 11:59pm this Sunday, April 28! Smol Grants are also open, and will be open for at least another month.
The Legacy Grants are provided to support existing projects which have been to Firefly in the past. Art can be exposed to many elements at Firefly—mud, rain, sun, and most of all, people—and this grant is designed to provide funding to help with wear and tear produced by this exposure.
The Burner Exchange Grants are for art that has already appeared either at a regional burn event or Burning Man and showcases the local flavor of its origin. Grant money is intended to be applied to minor maintenance / improvements and shipping costs to Vermont.
The Skillshare Grants allow artists to broaden or deepen their skill sets by funding specific classes or training in an artistic field.
Apply for any of these grants <http://grants.fireflyartscollective.org/> at our portal. For questions, contact us at grants(a)fireflyartscollective.org

unplanned.
TJ Kozma, Deanna Duffey, Talena Gandy and Kevin Tracey will be hosting for
the sixth year.
The weekend is jam packed with goodness! Something for everyone.
Safety Core trainings and cross-trainings with the other Cores. An

when working together.

an emergency or large scale incident working together with other Cores and
outside agencies.

relax and socialize with fellow volunteers.

Call for New Board Members
We are looking for a limited number of participants to add to the Firefly Arts Collective Board of Directors to fill positions vacated in the past year. The Board is responsible for the financial and legal obligations of Firefly Arts Collective Inc. The Board is also responsible for planning the long term development and growth of the organization. Board members are expected to physically attend monthly meetings in the Boston area and contribute several hours of work per week on a year-round basis.
To learn more about the specific responsibilities of Firefly Board Members, please review our Bylaws <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/firefly-arts-collective/bylaws/>.
If you have interest in contributing to Firefly at this organizational level, please fill out this Application for Board Membership. <https://forms.gle/dGbHmdSk1SZJ8mEdA>
After you fill out the form we will reply within a week to confirm receipt and may get back to you with some follow-up questions. We may invite you to attend a meeting to chat more about your responses and let you learn more about how we operate. Once we've had a chance to review all responses the Board will discuss and decide if we wish to add additional members, and solicit public comment on both candidates and sitting board members.
The Firefly Board of Directors is relatively small to keep discussion and consensus-based decision making practical. Any candidates who we are unable to invite to join the Board will be kept on file to consider as future vacancies arise, and we will also send out this request for expression of interest on a regular basis.
We're very excited to get new participants involved with the Firefly Board. Beyond the yearly Firefly camping event we would like to expand the year-round activities of Firefly Arts Collective. Firefly continues to collaborate with Somerville Open Studios and Figment Boston to bring more community art to our cities, and we are exploring other opportunities to engage more deeply with our larger home communities. We look forward to hearing from motivated participants with the time and energy to help expand and organize our community!
Please fill out the application form <https://forms.gle/dGbHmdSk1SZJ8mEdA> if this opportunity interests you, or contact board(a)fireflyartscollective.org <mailto:board@fireflyartscollective.org> if you have any questions about our process.
Hello Fireflies! Welcome to the start of Firefly 2019!
TLDR Summary: At registration for the ticket lottery, you will be asked to commit to how much you are willing to pay for a ticket. There are no changes to the lottery system. If you get a ticket, you’ll be asked to pay what you said you would. For Firefly to break even in 2019, the average ticket buyer would have to pay $95. We hope that some people pay more than the recommended average contribution, to cover the costs of some people paying less. This is an experiment: if it looks like Firefly won’t be able to meet its financial obligations as a result, the Board may decide to set a flat ticket price, as in past years.
In 2018, Firefly introduced Financial Assistance for ticketing, which meant that Fireflies could write in to say that they could only pay a portion of the cost of a ticket, and a bunch of other Fireflies donated more than the cost of their ticket to help cover the difference. The community stepped up pitched in more than enough to cover the costs of every Firefly requesting financial assistance. This year, we want to expand this pricing system…to everyone. That lets you, and all the other Fireflies, pay what you are willing and able to make Firefly happen.
So what’s the recommended ticket contribution?
Based on our budget, if we changed nothing else, the ticket price would be $95/person. For some of you, this is more than your finances can handle; for others, it’s remarkably little for an experience as important to you as Firefly. So, this year we’re going to let you decide what you can pay.
We ended 2018 in the red, but only barely. We expect 2019 expenses to be slightly higher–for instance, we’re adding 24-hour first aid/medical. For the last several years, we’ve kept ticket prices constant by adding about 10% more tickets…this year, we will not be increasing size of Firefly. Parking capacity and complexity is the largest structural constraint on event growth.
Our budget estimates for 2019 and more information about how we ended up with $95 is here. <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/getting-ready/tickets/financial-backg…>
How will getting a ticket work?
Of course, you can read all about tickets on our website! <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/getting-ready/tickets/>
The process of getting your Firefly ticket will change very little. There’s a FAQ describing in detail how things work. <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/getting-ready/tickets/ticket-info/>
When you register for your ticket you’ll be asked what making Firefly happen is worth to you. We’ll have a lottery and a waitlist, just like past years. When your name gets to the top of the list, you’ll receive a ticket offer and pay the amount you decided on at registration.
This is an experiment: if it looks like Firefly won’t be able to meet its financial obligations as a result, the Board may decide to choose a flat ticket price, as in past years.
Other pricing will remain the same, including bus ticket prices (which covered around half the cost of the buses in 2018).
How much you’re able to pay for your ticket does not affect the lottery.
We hope this goes without saying, but to be totally clear: when you register for the lottery, and indicate how much you’re willing to pay for a ticket, that price has no bearing on your chance of getting a ticket. Every participant has the same chance of getting a ticket in the lottery, and groups are handled the same way they have been in the past <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/getting-ready/tickets/ticket-info/>.
What happens if the new pricing system raises too much money?
If Firefly has a revenue surplus, that money will roll over towards the next year’s budget and will reduce the recommended average ticket contribution next year.
In 2018, the Financial Assistance system raised a bit more money than was needed. Because donors intended that money to go towards people requesting financial assistance, it won’t be used this year–we’ll reserve it until next year, in case we go back to a Financial Assistance model of ticketing.
Registration opens this week!
Ticket registration for Firefly 2019 will be open from Tuesday 16 April to Monday 29 April, and the Great Ticket Lottery will occur on 1 May. Register at volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org <https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/>.

Email questions about the Town Hall Meeting to: lead(a)fireflyartscollective.org <mailto:lead@fireflyartscollective.org>.
2) Help out Firefly Sanctuary by responding to a questionnaire (and Sanctuary wants a co-lead!)
Question 1. Do you know of an accessible space in Boston for a ~20 person training? I am working on scheduling one Sanctuary training in the Boston Area in May and one in June, to supplement the trainings at SFTYrd and at Firefly. I'm looking for accessible locations that can fit around 20 people. I have some options but am hoping to find the most accessible space possible.
Question 2. Do you know of a training date that will be in conflict with another important event/date? With this many people it will be impossible to find the perfect dates, but I at least know to avoid Porchfest weekend and other holidays like Memorial Day. Do you know of any other dates to avoid?
Question 3 and separate form. Do you have opinions or ideas for Sanctuary? I would love to hear them! Email sanctuary(a)fireflyartscollective.org <mailto:sanctuary@fireflyartscollective.org> or fill out this form <https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdn8Ww6NonBxO-hxSaxPLtHwdUUb947tla…> which prompts for specific feedback.
Co-lead wanted: Want to see behind-the-curtain of how Firefly is organized, and contribute your ideas? Join me as co-lead of Sanctuary! It will mostly be writing emails, but also it's fun to interact with the other leads and the Board and see how this ship miraculously runs so well.
Respond to sanctuary(a)fireflyartscollective.org <mailto:sanctuary@fireflyartscollective.org> before May 2019 with any suggestions, dates, opinions, or if you are interested in co-leading.
Cheers, Nate "Zieve," he/his/him, Sanctuary Lead-but-hopefully-Co-Lead 2019
