Safety at Firefly - How to Help Us Help Keep You Safe!

There have been some changes to the Safety Cluster this year, so please take note! *First Aid:* A contracted agency (NorthBeast) is providing first aid services to event participants. EMTs with festival/event experience will be staffing the First Aid station (right by the Rangers) during the entire event. There will also be self-service basic first aid supplies available at the Ranger Station, and some Rangers have basic first aid skills, but it is recommended that theme camps and individual Fireflies bring their own basic _first aid supplies_ <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/getting-ready/packing-list/>, as well as all personal medication. *Community Education Event:* While NorthBeast will be providing first aid and medical services, Firefly First Aid Volunteers will be hosting a community education event to help Fireflies be more prepared to help ourselves and each other with basic first aid and more serious injuries and conditions that could happen in the woods. If you want to learn some skills, look for details in the WWW! *Rangers* Rangers are friendly Fireflies who can help! This year, they will be wearing bright green t-shirts or vests. All Rangers can help connect you with NorthBeast for first aid/medical needs, and can escalate an emergency response if necessary. *Med Alert Cards* There will be medical alert cards available at the Ranger station for anyone to pick up to fill out and carry with them so they can be better served in case of an emergency. These can cite specific medical or mental health conditions, or any consideration someone would like responders to be informed about. . *In Case of Emergency* In the event of an emergency or a more serious medical issue, FIND A RANGER OR ANYONE WITH A RADIO. This is the best and quickest way to ensure a 911 call will find you. Rangers will escalate to the OODs, who have a plan in place to help outside emergency assistance find and access participants in need in the fastest way possible.

Firefly Express Bus Rider Ticket!

We will be offering a limited number of additional combined event + bus tickets (First Come, First Serve), which will go on sale Wednesday 6/28 at noon on the ticketing page, https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org/ . These tickets will be available to anyone currently on the waitlist. For a $180 flat fee, you will be able to skip the waitlist to buy a combined event + bus ticket as long as supplies (bus seats) last - currently there are a few dozen. Important information to know: - Buses leave from Boston area at noon on Tuesday 7/4 and Wednesday 7/5. - Riders will be permitted one large suitcase, one carry-on size suitcase, and one day bag. Got more stuff? Read on and use the gear truck! - Buses will make a 30-minute stop in White River Junction, for riders to buy groceries/perishables. - If you do not receive your wristband ON THE BUS you will not be permitted entry. That is, if you buy this ticket you may not arrive at Firefly in any other way except the bus. No tampons, condoms, glow sticks, diapers, bags, headlamps, cellphones, hopes or dreams. These clog the honey sucker and make a shitty job shittier! Sanctuary is a calm and serene place where Fireflies can come to ground themselves and to reconnect with their intentions for the event. This year, the Sanctuary team has picked the theme of *community*, and we ask for your help in creating a space where Fireflies can go to be surrounded by physical reminders of the love that we all have for one another by contributing to our community shrine. You can participate in two ways: 1. Bring an *offering* for the shrine! This offering can be any non-hazardous object that reminds you of a time when you have felt connected to Firefly and the community. You can bring your offerings to Sanctuary during Firefly, or you can contact us before the event to arrange a dropoff in either Somerville or Bethel. 2. E-submit a *piece of text* that resonates for you! Folks with large art projects who have already confirmed their placement may bring art up and stage it for assembly. **Folks cannot leave behind any personal camping items at the end of the Work Weekend.**** **Neither set up, nor under a tarp burrito - it all has to go back with you! • Folks coming up to scout campsites - **Look UP** - notify work weekend coordinators if you see any widowmakers (broken branches) hanging over your campsite! We will do our best to bring them down safely, and if we can’t we will put caution tape around the area. • **Do not terraform your campsite!** You may use a rake to clear branches and sticks away from where you plan to place your tents/structures, but you can’t turn your campsite into a construction project. If whatever you’re planning requires shovels and mattocks, you’re doing too much. Consider this your *CEASE & DESIST* notification. Bringing leaf blowers is strongly discouraged - if you blow all of the leaf litter away from paths and your campsite you would be leaving just dirt, which with a little bit of rain turns into slippery mud. • **Do not cut down any trees/saplings** - even if they are in your way - anything that is growing vertically is to remain vertical. Anything that has already fallen down and is in your way can be cut down to smaller pieces and moved out of the way. Sharp dead branches on the pines that are hanging at head level or below may be trimmed to avoid accidents. • **Do not make new firepits** - there are established firepits in certain areas. If a fire is started in any of the firepits, it must be monitored by at least one person at all times, and there must be a bucket of water nearby. *Questions? Shares will cost $20 each for 10 cu.ft. Last year we sold ~50 shares, and my personal gear was 1.5 shares. Load in happens in Medford from 11am Sunday 7/2 until sunset. Truck leaves Monday 7/3 around 11am and arrives on-site early that evening, barring roadblocks. Truck leaves the site late evening on Sunday 7/9. GTFO on time! Load out happens in Medford all day Monday 7/10. Gear will be staged in the driveway (if available) and in the fenced-in backyard. Firefly Land Update

Dear Fireflies, Part of the land where Firefly happens has changed hands. The long-time land-owners of the horse farm property on the other side of the rock wall from Laurelin, where we have upper parking and much of the woods uphill from Diode, sold last week. The important news is that the entire property was purchased by Dennis Zografos, a member of the Firefly community, with the express purpose to allow Firefly to continue in its current location. For Firefly 2023, the use of that property will be as it was in prior years, with the same rental agreement, with the new owner Dennis. Full disclosure: Dennis is a current Firefly Board Member. Correctly managing this payment within the Firefly bylaws structure is important to Dennis and the board, as is the transparency of this arrangement. The future development of the newly purchased land is in its nascent stage. Four members of the community, Dennis, Sage, Carly, and Dan, are creating a business entity to align with the values that are held by the Firefly Arts Collective organization <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/what-is-firefly/> and a plan that can accommodate our brightest collective visions. You can expect more information to be forthcoming in the next few weeks, including a detailed FAQ/Q&A about how this came to be as well as an invite to a community discussion during Firefly.
