Hello Lovely Participants! Having an event ticket is not enough to get into Firefly. You also NEED a parking pass or a bus ticket. The only exceptions are for people arriving by foot, bike, or motorcycle. PARKING PASS SALES END THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 26 at 11:59pm. Buy passes/tickets by going to tickets.fireflyartscollective.org, logging on, and clicking on the "ticket sales" tab. Firefly is a cooperative event that we all create together. We strongly encourage you to use the bus or rideshare, as parking is extremely limited. Full details here: https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/firefly/getting-ready/getting-there-t… Firefly happens on private land in Bethel, Vermont. The exact address of the event and other important arrival information will be sent to all paid ticketholders in a separate email this weekend. BUS TICKETS: Buses head up to the event from Boston on Wednesday at about 10am, Thursday at about 1pm and Friday at about 2:30pm. Pickups occur in Central Square Cambridge, Union Square Somerville, and Sullivan Square Boston. Tickets cost $45 round trip or $30 one-way. Buses all return on Monday July 4th. The buses are comfortable, include a grocery stop, and includes transportation of three pieces of luggage plus a day bag. Additional freight space is available for purchase by bus passengers. Please consider helping the sustainability of the event by using the buses. Bus tickets are available through 6pm on Tuesday, June 28, assuming they have not sold out. Cash sales are not available on day of travel. RIDESHARING: If you are driving, please try to offer any available space in your vehicle! If you are in need of a ride, please proactively seek one! Use our rideshare matching service at http://www.rickyrides.com/firefly-arts-collective PARKING PASSES: Parking passes purchased online through Sunday, June 26 cost $30. After that, passes will only be available for $60 cash at the gate. Only one occupant of each car needs to have a parking pass tied to their name. You can email parking before June 26 if you need to transfer a parking pass. Please be aware that some parking is off-site. Depending on when you arrive, you may be asked to unload your car, park offsite in the town of Bethel, and take a free shuttle back to the event. Parking volunteers will give you very specific instructions about how tightly together you need to park, please carefully follow their instructions. If you are still on the wait list and need a parking permit, you can buy one before receiving a ticket offer. If you do not receive a ticket offer at all, we will refund your permit after the event. Late Crew, Tuesday - LNT needs volunteers who have time in their busy lives to stay one more night on-land to help clean up the woods. The more people who sign up and help, the faster we get done, and the sooner we all get to go home and shower. Volunteers interested in staying late must attend the LNT Late Crew meeting at Diode on Saturday 7/2 @ 11 AM, or find Sway or Chris at another point before Sunday night. For this year’s go-round of woodland misadventures, Firefly has decide to outsource the production of their Event Guide (aka WhatWhereWhen) to the cheerfully lazy folks of Cabana Hammock. We promise to provide you with an event guide that lives up to the standards of efficiency, clarity, and transparency that Fireflies have come to expect. We’re putting the “What?” back in WhatWhereWhen! How does it work? This year’s version of the guide is essentially a big shared Google Calendar. Getting help at Firefly If your camp has a Murs radio you can get a hold of Rangers, First Aid, Sanctuary, or Fire Safety at any time on Channel 1. Listen to see if there is anyone else talking then, press the push to talk button, ask for Khaki (it’s helpful to say this twice), and say who you are & where you are. Once Khaki has confirmed a connection you can go ahead and ask for what you need. We ask for any camp communications that you use a Channel other than 1, so that the channel can stay clear for emergency use. Take the bus to Firefly (and get some perks) Parking is at a premium at Firefly, and it's a major problem for the event. Help do your part and ride the bus from Boston! You will be able to buy bus tickets through the same web portal as your event ticket once you get a ticket offer . Buses to Firefly run on three days (Wednesday June 29, Thursday June 30, and Friday July 1) and will each make three pickups in the Boston area (Central Sq Cambridge, Union Sq Somerville, and Sullivan Sq) Return buses will all leave on Monday, July 4. Passengers will be able to bring about three pieces of luggage plus a day bag. A freight truck will be available on Wednesday and Sunday to carry some luggage that does not fit on the bus, and additional freight shares on the truck will be available to bus passengers for a moderate fee. Upon arrival, volunteers will help you carry your labeled gear (and groceries) to designated drop points further up the hill, another benefit of taking the bus. Additionally, the buses will stop at a grocery store for last minute supplies. Bus tickets will cost $45 round trip or $30 one-way. You can buy through the same portal as your event ticket. Work Weekend sign-ups are live The 2016 Work Weekends are scheduled for every weekend in June. This is when volunteers set up event infrastructure, terraform the land, build The Bug, and scope out sites for theme camps and art. See the Work Weekend web page <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/firefly/getting-ready/work-weekends/> for details, including how to sign up as a Work Weekend Volunteer. To sign up for the fourth work "weekend", which *ends* on Saturday, June 25, please email workweekend(a)fireflyartscollective.org directly. This short weekend is only for volunteers working on The Bug or other art pieces that require advance set-up. You may also come work on your theme camp if unable to attend Early Arrival on Tuesday, June 28, especially if you are setting up on new land that has never been cleared for camping. Now that Firefly is JUST OVER A MONTH AWAY [hurray and/or oh-shit-I-need-to-work-on-art], we at Transport and Parking cores encourage you to start thinking about how you're getting to and from the event. Not only do all of us create the “Stuff To Do" with events, art and performances, but we volunteer to run the event itself. Everything from managing shuttle buses, to building the website, to clearing the trails, to greeting you when you arrive is done by volunteers. Some positions, like the Board and Conduct Committee, are year-round. The Festival Committee meets and works about 6 months out of the year, and the individual core leads meet and work about 3.5 months a year. Early on in the season it’s 1-2 hours a month, and closer to the event it might be 2-3 hours a week. We are currently looking to expand our volunteer cores. We have about 20 cores and we’d like to see most cores have 3 co-leads. This way the hand-off from year to year is an easier transition. Mostly people wind up volunteering to run a core for a few years (though there’s no requirement to stick around). Most of us enjoy it! It can be an extremely rewarding experience to volunteer to run an event with a fun, like-minded, creative and accepting group of people. This week we’d like to get volunteers for our *Art **Cluster *and our *City **Cluster*. *Our Art Cluster could use:* 1) - Someone to interact with the art grant core and make an at-event tour happen: an *Art Tour Coordinator.* Daytime art tour? Nighttime art tour? You decide. Make it your own project. 2) -* Art Truck *- help with general logistics of, and driving, the art truck. *Our City Cluster needs a few as well:* 3) - Someone to join Mamajean with *Transportation* core. This is shuttle bus and gear truck logistics. Most of this work is before the event. 4) - A few people to help with *Base Camp*. Formerly just the Coffee Kitchen, *Base Camp* is looking to expand and create a larger communal hang-out area around the Coffee Kitchen. 5) - *Gnomes* need a Co-lead! *Gnomes* help make the event run smoothly by filling in wherever a volunteer is needed. They roam the woods and check in on all the other cores. 6) - *Parking *is looking for a third co-lead! *Parking* checks parking passes, gets cars in tight next to one another, and manages shuttle vans to off-site parking. No small task on our hilly terrain. 7) - *Greeters* is looking for a third co-lead as well. *Greeters* are some of the first people you’ll meet at the event. They answer any questions, make sure you know where you’re going if you’re new, and give you a welcome-home greeting if you’re returning. Come get involved! It’s an informal meet and greet/volunteer fair/information-gathering opportunity/excuse for a cash bar! Who will be there? Members of the Firefly Board, members of the Conduct Committee, event leads, core leads, and tons of other Firefly participants. Why should you go? Get to know people, make new friends, catch up with old friends. Various board members, the conduct committee, event leads, and core leads will all be on hand to meet you and help point you in the direction(s) you need to make sure you have an excellent Firefly. We’ll have information about the various cores that help make Firefly function as well as ways to sign up for shifts (we all volunteer for shifts during the event). SFTY3rd The 3rd annual SFTY3rd will be held on May 13-15 in Scarborough, Maine for any Firefly that is interested in volunteering for a Firefly Safety Core (Medical, Rangers, Sanctuary, Fire and FAST volunteers.) SFTY3rd is a training/social weekend and an awesome opportunity for Safety Core volunteers to get involved, learn about working together in incidents and emergencies and meet other Safety Core volunteers. The *Burner Exchange (BEX) Grants *are for art that has *already appeared* either at a regional burn event or Burning Man and showcases the local flavor of its origin. Grant money is intended to be applied to maintenance / improvements and shipping costs to Vermont. BEX Grants are awarded for up to $1000. Schedule: March 28th: BEX grant applications open *April 25th: BEX grant applications due* *May 2nd: BEX Grants awarded* Submissions this year will be handled through the Firefly Art Grants Web Portal. The Board has decided that rather than having a hard deadline (which has passed) for scholarship tickets, we will keep the program open until either we issue the maximum number we have allocated this year, or until we get so close to Firefly that we don't have time to review them anymore. Submit Firefly Ticket Artwork! The skinny: Please submit your artwork to FFTicketArt(a)fireflyartscollective.org The DEADLINE: May 22 2016. Tickets should be 4x3" and contain the words "Firefly" and "June 29 - July 4, 2016". High quality PDF or JPEG, 600+ dpi and CMYK color preferred, if possible. For the past two years we were able to use ARTifacts submissions as an extra source of great ticket artwork. With the announced changes in the registration and ARTifacts format this year, we are going back to requiring that all ticket artwork submissions are sent in directly to FFTicketArt(a)fireflyartscollective.org. More information, such as the submission deadline, will be announced shortly. One particularly exciting aspect of making tickets out of ARTifacts was that we were able to use so many "physical", non-digitally created pieces. Ticketing Core volunteers have scanned some great drawings, paintings and all sorts of other hand-made objects that looked great printed - last year there was even one super sleek metal piece! We'd like to keep this trend going. So if you have a design that you'd rather submit in a physical form - please contact us at the address above. And we'll arrange obtaining it from you, and scanning and turning it into a printable ticket face. Please note the deadline (May 22, by the end of the day). We are planning to get it all done early this year! ---------- 6. New Leadership Roles at Sanctuary! Sign up Today! Sanctuary is looking for folks with backgrounds in psychiatric support to help make a better Sanctuary for all those looking for a safe and non-judgemental space during Firefly. These include: - Medical Liason - You'll ensure Sanctuary people are trainied properly on WHEN to call for medical support and how - Sexual Assault Liason - You'll ensure Sanctuary support folks are trained properly for supporting folks that may have gone through a sexually related trauma - Peer Advocacy Liason - You make sure folks going through complex scenarios have what they need - Psychiatric Liason - You'll make sure emotionally drained and struggling Fireflies have the support they need - Sanctuary Infrastructure - Make Sanctuary beautiful, manage inventory, ensure we leave no trace, and confirm power requirements are met - Sanctuary Training Coordinator - We have 3 trainings that begin in March, and many folks involved. Kids' Art Grants This is for all you Fireflies who are bringing kids younger than 16 to the event. While we give out a bunch of art grants here at Firefly HQ to help make the woods and the field even more amazing, those are all seemingly targeted towards adults. While out in San Francisco last week for Burning Man's Global Leadership Conference, I ended up talking to one of Utah's Element 11 organizers and she was telling me how they have an art grant program for kids. Well, huh, I thought, maybe we should have one as well. So, now we have! I would like to personally award four separate grants of $25 to children under the age of 16 who are coming to Firefly to make art with. Please work with your child and then send me their proposal and a brief statement about why art is important to them and the four winners will each receive $25 to make their art happen at the Firefly event this year. So, send a brief description of what your child wants to do, and why art is important to them to ruuskado(a)yahoo.com by midnight on May 6th. The winners will be notified by May 12th.
