Volunteer Gnomes need you!

This time next week, we'll be in the woods! Volunteer Gnomes are yet another great volunteer opportunity. Want to volunteer but don't want to sit at a station for 3 hours? Want to walk around in the woods with a radio without being a Ranger? Many shifts, you'll be able to spend most of your shift hanging out wherever you want with a radio. To sign up, go here: http://fireflyartscollective.org/firefly/join-a-core/gnomes/ *Volunteer Gnomes are responsible for making sure volunteering is going smoothly throughout Firefly. * As a Gnome, your primary duty is to run a systems check near the beginning of each shift. Equipped with your GnomePhone (ie radio) to solicit help if needed, you visit each of the volunteer base-stations about half an hour after each shift starts. (Gate, Greeters, Parking, Kitchen, and Rangers). You make sure everyone has shown up for their shift, find out whether the station needs anything, and generally make yourself available to ensure the station’s volunteers are happy. Take a trip around to make sure all the fires are tended. Check that there is enough toilet paper. Depending on the need, you can either take care of it yourself, solicit help from others, or get an organizer or core leader. New this year, you get to hang on to your radio for your entire shift! Occasionally, there are unanticipated demands for volunteers. For example, last year we needed to move the greeter station on short notice because the parking lot filled up. You are the recruiter in the woods if the need arises. Ideally, a handful of people should be able to form the Volunteer Gnome Troupe for the entire event. Ready to help? Take a look at the schedule, pick an open slot (or two! or three!), and fill out the signup form. Parking Core Needs Volunteers!!!

Hello Fireflies! One week until we head to the woods…have you signed up to volunteer yet? If not, don’t fret - there are still parking shifts available! Sign up for a Wednesday or Thursday shift and be one of the first to welcome your fellow Fireflies home as you help folks transition from their cars to the woods J We’re also looking for parking volunteers for shifts following the bug burn as well as to help with late arrivals and exodus on Saturday and Sunday. The awesomeness of Firefly wouldn't be possible without awesome volunteers. For the first time ever, Sanctuary is coming to Firefly!

Have a good ear? Have a knack for non-judgmental listening? Want to volunteer but you don’t want to jump into the deep end of the pool? For the first time ever, Sanctuary is coming to Firefly! What is Sanctuary, you ask? And why should you care? Because you care, that's why. And Sanctuary needs you! Sanctuary is a safe space where the citizens of Firefly can seek an outlet or assistance with emotional trauma. This could include issues at Firefly, home, work, assaults, personal relationships, and the like. It's different than sharing with your campmates, because let's face it, there are some things you can't even share with them. It's there to provide non-judgmental support and available assistance, including Medical support and Rangers, if necessary. This is the first year for Sanctuary at Firefly but it is an important and well-established entity at other Burning Man-related events, so it will be continued in the years ahead. Medical or counseling experience is nice but certainly not mandatory. Boston Bureau of Erotic Discourse (BBED) is coming to Firefly! *Not sure what BBED is?* BBED is a team of volunteers that provide information and education regarding rape and sexual assault on the grassy playa and in everyday life. *How will BBED be participating?* BBED will be leading workshops at Firefly University. We present the information in the workshops in a sex positive format. We believe that fun, safe play is best approached by learning to acknowledge and express your own personal desires and boundaries, while respecting those of others. *Why BBED at Firefly?* As an adjunct to the vital roles of the Firefly Emergency Services and the Firefly Rangers, we feel that BBED can be an important part of helping individuals safely navigate the sensual environment of Firefly. *Would like to help make BBED happen at Firefly?* We have volunteer roles working with Greeters and participating in workshops. Firefly Early Arrival and Gate signup

Hello Fireflies! Less than 2 weeks till Firefly! Woods and rain! Cups and contests! Lamps and lava and lions! Poodles and puppets! Empires! Diodes and drones and drawing and dancing! Boats and bears and bacon and balloons! Video domes and virtual realities! Lite brites and sprites and labyrinths and shadows! Flowers and fish! Gnomes and galaxies! Music including metal and much much more! It's all going to be out there! But it can't all happen without YOU helping make it happen! We still need some people at the gate, and we need you to sign up if you have a reason to arrive early. GATE The Gate is still looking for some volunteers. We need a few watchful gate keepers on Saturday night to stand guard when the gate has closed. We also need a handful of people on Sunday to help with the exodus. Check out the grid and sign up: http://fireflyartscollective.org/firefly/join-a-core/gate/ EARLY ARRIVALS -=WHO is allowed Early Arrival=- People who have a ticket and have a placed piece of art or a theme camp that has gotten permission to come early. -=WHAT do you have to do to get on Early Arrivals= If you would like to arrive early (ie: between noon on Tuesday, July 2nd and before the event officially opens at noon on Weds, July 3rd), please email earlyarrivals(a)fireflyartscollective.org with the following information: - Full name of each ticketed Firefly (as it appears on your ticket registration) - Responsibilities for which each person (or the group as a whole) is requesting Early Arrival - Camp (if applicable) - Whether you have a 4WD vehicle that needs to go into the woods and if so what is the type of vehicle and what is the license plate? Be conservative; only request Early Arrivals for the minimum crew necessary for your project. APPLICATION FOR EARLY ARRIVALS DEADLINE: FRIDAY, JUNE 28TH. -=WHEN=- Early Arrivals may arrive after noon on Tuesday, July 2nd (or, 24 hours before the event gates open). Please note that this is a request for early admittance, not a guarantee. If permitted, you will receive an email confirmation. Early Arrivals may leave and return to the site. Note that NO re-entry is permitted during Firefly. If you need to go to town, make that happen before noon on Wednesday, July 3rd. If you leave during the event, you will not be allowed back in. All cars must be out of the woods by 10a on Wednesday, so the Gate can officially open at noon on Wednesday (July 3rd). Absolutely no cars will be permitted into the woods after 9.30a on Wednesday. Please think ahead and work your schedule around this. You can all do math to figure out how long it will take to drive up to Firefly, drive up the road, unload, and bring your car back to the parking lot. Make it happen. No excuses. -=VEHICLES allowed in the event site during Early Arrivals=- Only 4WD/AWD vehicles may go into the event site. This is subject to common sense: if your RAV4 is piled high with concrete and lead, sagging under the haul, we may well tell you no, you may not drive up into the event site. This is for everyone's best interest. If you get stuck, we all have to help get your sorry vehicle out, and that is time not spent hauling 600 pounds of propane and 700 miles of tulle up the hill. Not to mention you're probably blocking a lot of people in or out. Absolutely no Priuses, no dump trucks, no mail trucks, no UHauls, no Saabs, no Beetles will be allowed into the event site and this list is not nearly exhaustive. These vehicles barely survive the parking lot. Don't ask to drive it up to the event site. Speaking of ill-suited cars: If you own a low-slung muscle car, consider leave it at home. This goes for everyone, Early Arrivals and regular arrivals. Seriously. The “parking lot” is a graded, gravel horse run. Use common sense and if you routinely bottom out while driving through Harvard Square, carpool with someone else. (PS: Our parking lot is slightly different this year. It’s still not paved, but it’s a step closer. PPS: if it feels like you parked in the same place last year you are parked in the wrong spot. This year's parking lot is further down the road than last year; we'll be there to help y'all out.) -=TICKETS=- Tickets are will call, bring you state issued ID to gain entry at the gate. Greetings Fireflies, It turns out we don't have as many Firefly General Tasks to complete this year as we thought we did. In addition, the owner of the land that hosts Firefly is hosting a wedding on Sunday, June 23rd. Due to these two things, we are cancelling the third Work Weekend. If you signed up for this Work Weekend already, a separate email has been sent to you with an explanation. If you have not signed up for this Work Weekend, but were planning to, please sign up for either Work Weekend #2 or Work Weekend #4 instead. We apologize for any inconvenience.
