REMINDER: You must be signed up ahead of time to attend a Work Weekend. The first Work Weekend is THIS weekend and includes Theme Camp and Art Installation placement. As many of you know, it takes a lot of work for Firefly to happen both before and during the event. Firefly is getting closer by the day and it's almost time to do the necessary tasks to prepare for the event. There are 3 Firefly Work Weekends this year. The Work Weekend Dates and links for signing up are below. Please do not arrive before 6pm on Friday night on each Work Weekend. You **must* *sign up ahead of time to attend a Work Weekend, and will need to check in upon arrival. If you are not signed up ahead of time, you will be asked to leave the site. The number of Work Weekend volunteer spots is limited, so please make sure you sign up early All work and no play isn't any fun, but please keep in mind that everyone's priority during the Work Weekends is to accomplish necessary tasks and complete required projects to make Firefly happen. Some of this year’s projects & tasks include*:* determining locations for various event structures, preliminary site mapping, clearing and marking trails, digging holes, cutting and gathering firewood, road & trail trenching, parking lot preparation, and gathering sticks for the creation of The Bug. The following information is required for signup: - Name - Email Address - Ride/Car Situation (for ride share) - Theme Camp, Art Installation, and/or Core Affiliation - Skills and/or Expertise - Tools bringing for self and/or to share - Specific projects and/or tasks you would like to work on *Work Weekend #1 - Theme Camp & Art Installation Placement and Work Weekend * *Friday June 15th - Sunday June 17th* * * In addition to Work Weekend tasks required for the infrastructure of the event, placement for Theme Camps and Art Installations will take place this weekend starting Saturday afternoon and continuing on Sunday. Once your spot is chosen, marked, and cleared through placement co-leaders and mapping, report to a Work Weekend co-leader for assignment and/or direction to Cores for tasks. During this Work Weekend, the only work done for individual camps will be Saturday evening after other tasks and Sunday if there is no need for help with general/Core tasks or after those tasks have been completed. The June 9th & 10th Infrastructure Work Weekend has been cancelled. The remaining 3 Work Weekends will still be happening as planned. I have listed the dates and descriptions below as a reminder. An announcement with more information about the tasks and projects that need to be completed during the Work Weekends and information about sign-up including links for sign-up will be sent out by this Wednesday. Stay tuned!! -Firefly Work Weekend #1 - Theme Camp & Art Installation Placement and Work Weekend Friday June 15th - Sunday June 17th Placement for Theme Camps and Art Installations will take place this weekend as well as other Work Weekend tasks. If you are planning an Art Installation or Theme Camp, please make sure that at least one representative from your camp can attend this Work Weekend. Only placement, not preparation for Theme Camps and Art Installations will take place this weekend. Please be prepared to work on other Work Weekend tasks before and after Placement. Work Weekend #2 - Work Weekend, minimal Theme Camp preparation Work Weekend Friday June 22nd - Sunday June 24th This Work Weekend will focus mainly on completing Work Weekend tasks. Minimal Theme Camp preparation, such as clearing space and gathering wood will be allowed after general Work Weekend tasks are completed. *** The deadline is tomorrow, May 31, 2012 @ 11:59pm. If you are feeling you may not be able to finish your great design on time and need a couple of days of extension, let us know and we'll work something out. *** Submissions should be sent to FFTicketArt (at) fireflyartscollective (dot) org Technical details: "Firefly" and "July 4 - July 8, 2012" must be featured in your design 300 dpi or higher resolution 2" x 4 1/2" image size, no borders pdf, Illustrator, Photoshop, png, high quality jpeg. Non-technical: We've always had good-looking tickets at Firefly. The unique and radically DIY ticket artwork produced within the community is just one of the countless awesome things that define the event. Admittedly, we may have even come to take it for granted, that so many of you artistic people would come forward with beautiful designs every year. Indeed, most years we have had more submissions than we could print. So last year we weren't even trying too hard and only sent one announcement early on. We still got some truly beautiful tickets (thank you guys!), but alas, there were fewer of them than in the years past. Well, we've learned our lesson. This year, there will be extra reminders, and we'll be taking it seriously; working with the artists, and making sure that if your entry ends up going to print, you are made appropriately famous inside our small but fabulous community! We're also doing something new this year! After Firefly, there will be an online picture gallery with all art ticket submissions, even if your design wasn't chosen to print. Ticket Art submissions are open to anyone in the community, even if you aren't going to be attending Firefly this year. Also, some general guidelines: There are no formal requirements for the artwork. It is definitely not a design competition. Remember, Firefly is all about DIY. So you should not be afraid to submit your work because you don’t think it looks “professional” enough. But it should be original, above all. If it’s based on some really awesome graphics, but you simply found it on the internets, then it kinda goes against the very philosophy of our event. It may be very simple, it doesn’t have to contain multiple levels of painfully elaborate detail. But it always helps when it looks like some loving effort has been put into it. If it’s just a picture taken at the event, with the word “Firefly” written in whatever was the default font in Photoshop... granted, it can be a really good picture and can still be a good-looking ticket, but it just spells “lazy”. And that may work against your design when compared to others. It’s always a good idea to avoid anything that’s potentially divisive -- such as things that are explicitly about politics, religion, etc. And any references to anything illegal and otherwise inappropriate -- we don’t even have to mention that, do we? So yes indeed, it is time to go and produce some nice-looking tickets! See you in the woods!! Firefly

Ticket Refund Deadline

Dear Fireflies, The deadline for guaranteed refunds is June 15th. If you return your ticket after the 15th we will only be able to refund it if we find somebody on the waitlist still interested in going. The sooner you get your refund the sooner the people in the waiting list will know that they can go. If you want to return your ticket after June 15th the ticket committee will try to find a buyer on the Waitlist. If a buyer is found we will refund your ticket. All tickets are willcall and require a valid ID. Ticket transfers are not allowed. If you show up at the gate and your name is not on the ticket list, we will be forced to turn you away; no exceptions. <3, ~Firefly~

Art and Theme Camp Placement Registration

Howdy Fireflies! It's time to talk about placement. Who wants to be on the map? For those who don't know, while there's a lot of open camping in the woods at Firefly, most or all Theme Camps and Art Installations have set locations organized by your friendly Placement Core! The deadline for placement submissions is *June 8th at 11:59pm* The first placement work weekend is June 16th and June 17th, starting Saturday afternoon. Below are our policies. Please read them so you understand how this all works. If you have any questions about placement please contact us at placement(a)fireflyartscollective.org * Follow this link to fill out the information we need: * *2012 Placement Form * http://form.jotformpro.com/form/21406760545956 Pecan, Paul and the other placement volunteers really appreciate your cooperation -- the more info they have in advance, the better they'll be able to make the event successful for everyone. Plus you know you want to be on the map! Art and Theme Camp Placement Policies 1. Themecamps returning from last year will get first dibs on the spot they had last year. If there is any conflict between former members of a themecamp that has split up, or anything like that, Placement Core will attempt to resolve any conflicts together with any representatives of the camps who have signed up for the first placement work weekend and attend it (who will receive priority over camps without representation at the first work weekend). 2. June 16th and 17th starting Saturday afternoon If you have at least one representative of your camp or project at the first placement work weekend and like to choose a specific spot (and didn't already have it last year), Placement Core will work with you/them to look at the available placement options and help you/them pick the one that will work best for you and for Firefly as a whole. 3. If you submit a camp/project e-mail to Placement but don't show up at the first placement work weekend, Placement Core will select a spot for you. If you send an e-mail saying "I want to be at 22 Verdant" or whatever, and fail to have representative at the first work weekend, Placement Core may ignore your location request and place your camp/project according to the collective best interests of Firefly. 4. If you don't send Placement an e-mail but you're bringing a theme camp or large art project to the event, you're on your own. You won't be on the map, you'll have to find a spot for yourself when you arrive at the event from among the areas not already claimed, and if your camp makes a high volume of sound (or a moderate volume of sound but too close to a mapped sound camp), Nick of the Sound Core will find you and ask you to turn it down. 5. Fire and Sound While there will be more space for general camping and theme camps this year, there will not be any new sites for in-ground fire pits or amplified sound. Any fire other than camp stoves for cooking must be approved by the Fire Safety Core. Tiki torches are not allowed. 6. Leave No Trace We are asking Themecamps to have a designated Leave No Trace contact person for their camp. This person should be your camp’s LAST member to leave the area that was designated for your camp. They will be responsible for all items left at your camp. It is highly recommended that they also volunteer for Firefly 2012 Leave No Trace. They get to stay an extra day and leave our little spot in the woods as beautiful as it was before we got there. This weekend is just for placement, not working on setup for your camps -- the others weekends are for that! Don’t miss it! If necessary we will also continue placement the following weekend June 24th and 25th but don’t count on it. 8. Participate! Please encourage members of your camp to take shifts in the various volunteering opportunities for Firefly such as parking, rangers, greeters, kitchen and gate.
