Read on for important event updates; we’ll keep it short and sweet. *1284 *Fireflies have tickets. *10 *Fireflies are wait listed. *6* days until the bug burns. *Contents:* *1) WEATHER IS HAPPENING - Don’t Fuck Up* *2) Print ALL the things – map, waiver, WWW guide* *3) Sign up for volunteer shifts and *remember when they are** *4) Respect the land, and DRIVE SLOWLY* *5) PSA: Avoid dead things.* *6) Procrastinators rejoice! And buy local.* ----- *1) ICYMI: It's HOT! * That means we need everyone to take some precautions so you don’t succumb to the heat. First of all, use common sense. Try to avoid heavy work in the sun from 11-4; that is when it is the hottest and you are likely to sweat more than you can drink. Maybe set up in the woods and unload in the morning and late afternoon. *If *you are working outside during the hottest time of day, you can take a number of precautions to prevent heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses. When temperatures climb, remember to: - *Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing.* Wearing excess clothing or clothing that fits tightly won't allow your body to cool properly. - *Protect against sunburn.* Sunburn affects your body's ability to cool itself, so protect yourself outdoors with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you're swimming or sweating. - *Drink plenty of fluids.* Staying hydrated will help your body sweat and maintain a normal body temperature. - *Take extra precautions with certain medications.* Be on the lookout for heat-related problems if you take medications that can affect your body's ability to stay hydrated and dissipate heat. (for example heart medications. - *Never leave anyone in a parked car.* This is a common cause of heat-related deaths in children. When parked in the sun, the temperature in your car can rise 20 degrees Fahrenheit (more than 6.7 C) in 10 minutes. It's not safe to leave a person in a parked car in warm or hot weather, even if the windows are cracked or the car is in shade. When your car is parked, keep it locked to prevent a child from getting inside. - *Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day.* If you can't avoid strenuous activity in hot weather, drink fluids and *rest frequently* in a cool spot. Try to schedule exercise or physical labor for cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or evening. - *Be cautious if you're at increased risk.* If you take medications or have a condition that increases your risk of heat-related problems, such as a history of previous heat illness, avoid the heat and act quickly if you notice symptoms of overheating. If you still want to sign up for volunteer shifts: https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org *4) DBAA* Landowners have requested that we drive slowly. Once you leave the paved road, you observe a 5 mile-per-hour speed limit until you leave the event. Both landowners have animals that we do not want to spook, and the landowners themselves will be home during the event. We have very good relations with the landowners and hope to keep it that way. At a time when other regional burns struggle to find a venue, Firefly has been on the same site since 2009. One reason is that we as community respect the landowners' property and take our trash with us. Anything that was not on the property before we arrive must be taken away. This includes food waste, cooking oil, bacon grease, and other biodegradable items. Cigarette butts must never hit the ground. Remember to look in the trees for random bungee cords, clothesline, or rope. Goodwill can be hard to come by once it is lost. Firefly has very good relations with the landowners and we wish to keep it that way. Coordinating for Leave No Trace Late Crew? We are still located in a beautiful natural forest which does contain natural hazards like trees that are dead and standing. Look for the signs: is there a tree trunk that is not standing straight up? Is there a large long-since-dead tree trunk that has woodpecker holes all over it? These are potential dangers! If there are any questionable hazards near your theme camp or open camping areas, please do not hesitate to contact DPW for a safety assessment. *6) Buy local* Please consider supporting the local community before you arrive or after you leave. Unlike many regional burns, we have been on the same site since 2009. One reason is that we have a positive impact on the town. So if you think you may need something, buying it in Bethel, VT benefits the town and Firefly. When buying, don’t forget to mention to people that you are from the Firefly Festival. No re-entry is allowed once you have arrived, so grab what you need before you show up! How to Have an Emergency at Firefly: SAFETY edition [Glowbe 2018.06]

*What would you do in an emergency at Firefly? Who can you ask about First Aid, fire concerns, or mental sanctuary at the event? A quick primer on our volunteer safety cores — ready to help. 911 and Emergencies: Radios are the fastest way to get help.In an Emergency:* * Any MURS Radio on Channel 1 will reach Rangers HQ to call for help. * You can also go to Ranger HQ, Gate, Greeters, Kitchen, Sanctuary or ask the nearest person with a radio to call for Rangers. Rangers will get First Aid volunteers there quickly, and they have a plan to help outside emergency assistance find and access participants in need, in the fastest manner possible. Local Hospital directions and info can be found on the back of your parking pass. ———- RANGERS If you have any questions or need any assistance during the event, reach out to the Firefly Rangers. Rangers are a group of volunteers that focus on the safety of the participants of Firefly and encourage self reliance, individual accountability, and shared responsibility among Fireflies. Rangers are a visible community resource, identified by their khaki-colored clothing (like a khaki shirt with the words 'Firefly Ranger'.) Rangers walk around Firefly in pairs. All Rangers carry radios and can quickly connect and arrange for other community resources including First Aid, Sanctuary, or Fire Core. Feel free to flag down a Ranger if you need anything! You can also stop by Ranger Headquarters (aka Ranger HQ, Safety HQ) at any time of day or night to get assistance or say hi! Ranger HQ is at the intersection of Mercurial and Verdant, adjacent to Open Stage. ———- FIRST AID Firefly First Aid is not a medical service. We are not doctors to diagnose you; we are not nurses to administer treatments to you. We are volunteers who are willing to provide you with first aid assistance if you find that you’ve forgotten to remind yourself to pack your bacitracin. Remember to look out for ticks, knives, sticks, rocks, fire, art, lasers, trees, hippies, 4-wheeled all terrain vehicles, DPW, darkwads, the dark, the sun, undercooked food, overcooked food, cancer, chemtrails, rain, water, lack of water, air, lack of air, fun, lack of fun, too much fun, alcohol, mud, hills, and slippery slopes. Oh, and look out for your friends, too – as good friends do. Let us not forget how terribly hazardous to your health these things could be! If you find yourself in a predicament for which you are ill-prepared, please come to the FFFA tent and ask for help. If SHIT GETS REAL and you think you or a friend needs to go the hospital, find us without delay. The fastest way to get help is to ask a Ranger or anyone with a radio to call First Aid, or go to the First Aid Tent located behind Ranger HQ. If it is truly an emergency, we can look after you while coordinating the call to 911. If it’s not an emergency, we can help you assess your options and decide the best way for you to proceed. If you have a condition you want others to be aware of (like an allergy) we will have purple medical bands available at Gate and the First Aid tent. ———– SANCTUARY Sanctuary offers Fireflies peer counseling in the event of a non-medically related event or emergency. Sanctuary is a safe, comfortable, and private space for participants that need a caring listener or low-stimulus environment. Sanctuary volunteers help participants walk through their difficult time. We engage with them when they need someone to talk to, need assistance with emotional trauma, interpersonal issues, anxiety, triggering of past events, or just overwhelmed and overstimulated by the Firefly experience. Sanctuary is located at the top of the field just to the right of the main entrance to the woods on Mercurial Path. If you need Sanctuary assistance and are unable to come to our location, please ask a Ranger to radio for Sanctuary or go to Ranger HQ. ———– FIRE CORE Firefly Fire Core provides experienced support to ensure fire safety, fire art safety and fire performance safety at Firefly. Fire volunteers assist you with safe use of fire pits and generators. They also oversee the use of fire performance areas and fire Conclave on Bug burn night. GENERATORS — If you've got a generator, please make sure to keep it at least 10' from your pile of gas cans and anything else combustible (like tents). EXISTING FIRE PITS — No new fire pits are allowed. All the standard rules apply to the existing pits: clear the area, make sure you have a FULL water bucket and a bucket of dirt or a shovel around, and keep the fire attended at all times, no exceptions, period. If your fire is found unattended IT WILL BE PUT OUT. ABOVE-GROUND FIRE PITS — All of the above for existing fire pits, plus you need to make sure it does not leave a burn scar. FLAME EFFECTS — All flame effects must be inspected and tagged by Fire Safety before you can operate. Please make sure to send in your safety plans which include operation plans, diagram that shows how the effect works and its layout to fast(a)lists.fireflyartscollective.org. These inspections will look primarily at placement, construction, and safety equipment. We are going to be checking NFPA 160 compliance. Flame effects must be attended at all times by a sober and competent operator. BURNABLE ART — If you've got art that will be burned, and we haven't already been in touch, please email fast(a)lists.fireflyartscollective.org immediately and let us know what you're working on. All artists are expected to manage their own perimeters, including recruiting volunteers. As always, TIKI TORCHES, PYROTECHNICS, and FIREWORKS are not allowed. FIRE SPINNING safety meetings for Conclave will occur at Friday 3pm at Lions and Saturday 2pm at Diode. Locations where fire spinning is allowed are in circles at Diode, Lamp, and Lions. You can find Fire Core volunteers by flagging one of us down as we walk around the event (we'll be in red shirts), or by radio through the Rangers or by going to Ranger HQ. ———- SECURITY As in previous years, Firefly has contracted outside security staff to be stationed at Gate. They will assist Gate volunteers by verifying IDs and ensuring everyone who gets in has a ticket. These staffers provide security for other Vermont festivals and concerts, and are familiar with Firefly—this will be their 5th year assisting us. They make a point of treating all participants with respect. They are here to support us and are trained to defuse any potential situations that Firefly volunteers may not be comfortable handling. They will only leave Gate and enter the event if specifically requested by event organizers, and will be accompanied by event organizers at that time. They are friendly, like to help out, and enjoy staffing our event. Parking is looking for a few good drivers! This year we have more parking space than ever, but that means we'll be relying on the shuttle more than ever… and there's still two shuttle slots that we very much need to fill, it's easy work and you can subject fellow fireflies to whatever awful car-singing you like while you're doing it! :-D You can sign up for shifts here: https://volunteer.fireflyartscollective.org We need people to volunteer for parking for Early Arrival. Our grizzled veteran Soundc0re has loving solutions - it just takes is your cooperation. New for 2018 — Every camp with a sound system weighing more than 18 lbs must join Soundcore to help in monitoring sound levels. This system really works if everyone participates! Each camp enlists one or more humans to help with this - they are simply tasked with monitoring an assigned camp a short distance away, every few hours. Prep your gear responsibly, and pick up MOOP as you walk the woods. Another way to foster this relationship: Shop Locally. This makes a positive impact on the town. Buy supplies in the VT town where Firefly happens! And when you buy local, mention to people that you are from the Firefly Festival. Ticket-holders will soon receive info about businesses in town that sell useful or tasty stuff. If you think you may need something, buying it in our town benefits the town and Firefly. Firefly has very good relations with the landowners and we wish to keep it that way. <3 7) 4x4 Vehicles: Hill Access Info for Early Arrival & ExodusGTFO* team helps make it possible for some large camp/art projects (with 4WD vehicles) to transport their infrastructure to and from the woods during Early Arrival & Exodus. If you are planning to bring Art or a Theme Camp to Firefly this year, and wish to have it listed on the map and/or reserve space for it, then you need to register it with Placement as soon as possible. Get to know your fellow Fireflies and the land before the event - learn skills and break a sweat in scenic VT to boot! This year’s WW dates: *June 2 -- Chainsaw Skills Training offered in VT WW1- June 8-10 WW2- June 15-17 [+Placement] WW3- June 22-24 *Signups are due by the Thursday before each weekend. *Anyone wishing to use a Chainsaw: see ‘Chainsaw Skills’ post below this one. The Basics — Work Weekends in June are when volunteers travel up to the event space and prepare it. This can include but is not limited to gathering sticks for the bug, repairing or creating new paths, and general maintenance. Volunteers arrive after 6pm on Fridays (June 8th, 15th, and 22nd) and are expected to vacate by 6pm on Sundays. Tasty lunch is provided by Work Weekend Corps(™) on Saturday with basic snacks and coffee available the rest of the weekend. There is a lot of do in a relatively small amount of time, so it’s important that if you are going to attend work weekends you understand that the crews and corps are there to work, this is not a ‘Firefly lite’ or party event. That being said, there is a lot of fun to be had and it’s an excellent way to meet new people if you are new to the event and/or the community. We accept and encourage anyone and everyone to volunteer and will make accommodations for those with specific needs. Placement Brunch — June 17th is placement brunch which begins at 12pm. It is strongly encouraged that if your camp is sending reps to placement weekend, they be ready to contribute to the infrastructure work as well. Due to limited parking, if you will be attending placement only YOU MUST still register with the WW form and indicate that you’ll be attending placement. Since much of DPW’s work involves the use of chainsaws, we strongly encourage our chainsaw-wielding volunteers to attend this. This is a hands-on event where participants will have an opportunity to apply their training at the Firefly location site. This event is open to all Firefly volunteers, though preference will be given to DPW staff and WW volunteers. The event will be on Saturday, June 2 from 9 AM to 5 PM with a break for lunch at the Firefly site near Bethel, VT. Any person who plans on or wishes to be using a chainsaw this year must demonstrate safe and sane use of the saw. If there is interest, participants can arrive on Friday night and stay thru Sunday and help Firefly get a jump on timber work for the upcoming Work Weekends.” Details here: https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/news/june-2nd-chainsaw-safety-skills-… 5) Fire Art reqs & registration for anything that burrrrns Calling all fire artists! * If you plan to bring art with Flame Effects, OR intend to burn your art or structure, you must fill out the Fire Art Registration Form by June 25. * All Flame Effects and any Burnable Art are considered Fire Art. While fire spinning is also a form of fire art it does not need anything sent in prior to the event. If you wish to spin in the Conclave, you need to attend a meeting at Firefly. After June 19th the Firefly Incident Report Form can still be used to make reports, but those reports will not be investigated until after July 23rd. But our parking is v e r y limited -- so how do we fit everyone? The answers: * Firefly/Boston Bus * Ride shares * Parking passes * Offsite overflow parking * Socialism. Most of these require that YOU buy or plan a thing in advance. Socialism isn’t really a ‘plan’; but it *is* a theme that ties together carpooling and bus tickets and volunteering and luxury gay space communism. FestComm and Placement have updated the Art & Theme Camp Placement policy. Here is what’s new - a) The "Returning Camps and Art" policy now says that returning camps and art usually can use the space that they had in the previous year -- not "in previous years." This means that if a camp takes a year off, they may not be able to return to the space the following year, for example, if another camp made good use of the space in the meantime. (At Placement Sunday last year, there was a dispute between two camps that had used the same space at different times, so this change was made in part to easily resolve any such disputes in the future.)b) The "Returning Camps and Art" policy now gives a specific example of why a returning camp might have some or all of its space moved -- ensuring that spots along the named paths have interactive spaces and art, and kitchens or personal tents are placed elsewhere.c) The "Conflict Mediation" policy now emphasizes that each placement representative must be prepared to make a final decision at Placement Sunday about the placement of the camp (or art project) they are representing. Occasionally if a dispute at Placement is not resolved the discussion has been moved to email; however, it's hard to make informed decisions when not at the physical site, so we want to minimize these email discussions.Email <placement(a)fireflyartscollective.org <placement(a)fireflyartscollective.org>> if you have any questions. We think it’s been a success so far. Here is a snapshot to date: * FATP applicants each named a ticket price they could pay if offered: either zero dollars, or a different dollar amount. * The starting budget was equivalent to 14.5 full-price tickets. * 189 people (17% of ticketed Fireflies) donated more funds to add to that budget, when they purchased their own tickets. * Result: So far, we have been able to help over 30 Fireflies to come home to that thing in the woods. -----Got a critical announcement for the community?
