Interested in helping bring art to Firefly? Want to help choose what kind of projects are funded for the event? This is call out to any of you who might be interested in helping to review the proposals for Firefly's Art Grants <http://fireflyartscollective.org/art-grants/> this year! We are looking for approx 15 folks who are interested in helping to make this aspect of Firefly successful. Requirements: 1. You must have attended at least 1 (one) previous Firefly in order to join and participate in the selection committee. 2. You must not be applying for a 2018 Firefly Art Grant. 3. There are three blocks available; you can sign up for any number of blocks, but for each block you must attend both dates. Meetings will take place in Somerville (a short walk from Davis Square). These discussions can be lively at times; food and drinks are potluck-style/bring your own. - Tea (Anniversary) and Temple Grant Meetings: - Thursday, February 22nd at 7:30 PM - Thursday, March 1st at 7:30 PM - Creativity and Legacy Grant Meetings: - Thursday, March 8th at 7:30 PM - Thursday, March 15th at 7:30 PM - Skillshare / BEX / Smol (*We only need a couple people max for this group; it may be rolled into previous groups, time-depending*): - Thursday, March 22nd at 7:30 PM - Thursday, March 29th at 7:30 PM 4. Commit to reading and recording your thoughts on up to 40 applications, which may take 4-6 hours of brain time. The Intense Details: The job requires a lot of reading and talking as we typically receive over 35 applications for Creativity Grants and a smaller pool of Tea (Anniversary) and Temple Grants. We will have 2 weeks to make our decisions for the two sets of grants, with two meetings per grant. That's a total of 4 meetings altogether. We strongly encourage volunteers to come to both blocks of meetings, but if you can only come to one set that's OK too. This is a commitment of about 15-20 hours; 6-8 hours of reading and cogitating and four (maybe six) 2-hour meetings where we hash it all out. Once the application deadline has passed, the committee has about a week to read the applications over and fill out a review sheet to decide how well each application met the criteria. We review the applications for Thoughtfulness, Creativity, and Feasibility (explained in detail here <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/participate/art-at-firefly/art-grants/> and during the meetings). This is followed by the aforementioned meetings where we compare notes and formulate follow-up questions for all applicants. We wait a week to give time for artists to get their replies back to us, then we meet again and make our final decisions. How to Have an Emergency at Firefly: SAFETY edition [Glowbe 2017.06]

What would you do in an emergency at Firefly? Who can you ask about First Aid, fire concerns, or mental sanctuary at the event? A quick primer on our volunteer safety cores -- ready to help. 911 and Emergencies: Radios are the fastest way to get help. In an Emergency: * Any MURS Radio on Channel 1 will reach Rangers HQ to call for help. * You can also go to Ranger HQ, Gate, Greeters, Kitchen, Sanctuary or ask the nearest person with a radio to call for Rangers. Rangers will get First Aid volunteers there quickly, and they have a plan to help outside emergency assistance find and access participants in need, in the fastest manner possible. Local Hospital directions and information can be found on the back of your parking pass. ———- RANGERS If you have any questions or need any assistance during the event, reach out to the Firefly Rangers. Rangers are a group of volunteers that focus on the safety of the participants of Firefly and encourage self reliance, individual accountability, and shared responsibility among Fireflies. Rangers are a visible community resource, identified by their khaki-colored clothing (like a khaki shirt with the words “Firefly Ranger” written on it.) Rangers walk around Firefly in pairs. All Rangers carry radios and can quickly connect and arrange for other community resources including First Aid, Sanctuary, or Fire Core. Feel free to flag down a Ranger if you need anything! You can also stop by Ranger Headquarters (aka Ranger HQ, Safety HQ) at any time of day or night to get assistance or say hi! Ranger Headquarters is located at the intersection of Mercurial and Verdant, adjacent to the open stage. ———- FIRST AID Firefly First Aid (FFFA) is not a medical service. We are not doctors to diagnose you; we are not nurses to administer treatments to you. We are volunteers who are willing to provide you with first aid assistance if you find that you’ve forgotten to remind yourself to pack your bacitracin. Remember to look out for ticks, knives, sticks, rocks, fire, art, lasers, trees, hippies, 4-wheeled all terrain vehicles, DPW, darkwads, the dark, the sun, undercooked food, overcooked food, cancer, chemtrails, rain, water, lack of water, air, lack of air, fun, lack of fun, too much fun, alcohol, mud, hills, and slippery slopes. Oh, and look out for your friends, too – as good friends do. Let us not forget how terribly hazardous to your health these things could be!If you find yourself in a predicament for which you are ill-prepared, please come to the FFFA tent and ask for help. If SHIT GETS REAL and you think you or a friend needs to go the hospital, find us without delay. The fastest way to get help is to ask a Ranger or anyone with a radio to call First Aid, or go to the FFFA Tent located behind the Ranger HQ. If it is truly an emergency, we can look after you while coordinating the call to 911. If it’s not an emergency, we can help you assess your options and decide the best way for you to proceed. If you have a condition you want others to be aware of (like an allergy) we will have purple medical bands available at Gate and the FFFA tent. See you in the woods! And remember folks, the extra F is for…Friendly! ———– SANCTUARY Sanctuary offers Fireflies peer counseling in the event of a non-medically related event or emergency. Sanctuary is a safe, comfortable, and private space for participants that need a caring listener or low-stimulus environment. Sanctuary volunteers help participants walk through their difficult time. We engage with them when they need someone to talk to, need assistance with emotional trauma, interpersonal issues, anxiety, triggering of past events, or just overwhelmed and overstimulated by the Firefly experience. Sanctuary is located at the top of the field just to the right of the main entrance to the woods on Mercurial Path. If you need Sanctuary assistance and are unable to come to our location, please ask a Ranger to radio for Sanctuary or go to Ranger HQ. ———- GATE SECURITY As in previous years, Firefly has contracted outside security staff to be stationed at Gate. They will assist Gate volunteers by verifying IDs and ensuring everyone who gets in has a ticket. These staffers provide security for other Vermont festivals and concerts, and are familiar with Firefly—this will be their fourth year assisting us. They make a point of treating all participants with respect. They are here to support us and are trained to defuse any potential situations that Firefly volunteers may not be comfortable handling. They will only leave Gate and enter the event if specifically requested by event organizers and will be accompanied by event organizers at that time. They are friendly, like to help out, and enjoy staffing our event. Feel free to say hi as you come in and greet them as you would any other volunteer! ———– FIRE CORE Firefly Fire Core provides experienced support to ensure fire safety, fire art safety and fire performance safety at Firefly. Fire volunteers assist you with safe use of fire pits and generators. They also oversee the use of fire performance areas and fire Conclave on Bug burn night. A few 2017 highlights below. CONDITIONS – It has been very wet in Vermont. Lots of rain. Good for burning things. FIRE SPINNING – Safety meetings for Conclave will occur Thursday at Noon at Lions and Friday at 1pm at Diode. Locations where fire spinning is allowed are in circles at Suds ‘n Spuds, Lamp, and Lions. These are the ONLY locations where fire spinning is allowed. GENERATORS – If you’ve got a generator, please make sure to keep it at least 10′ from your pile of gas cans and anything else combustible (like tents). EXISTING FIRE PITS – No new fire pits are allowed. All the standard rules apply to the existing pits: clear the area, make sure you have a FULL water bucket and a bucket of dirt or a shovel around, and keep the fire attended at all times, no exceptions, period. If your fire is found unattended IT WILL BE PUT OUT. ABOVE-GROUND FIRE PITS – All of the above for existing fire pits, plus you need to make sure it does not leave a burn scar. FLAME EFFECTS – All flame effects must be inspected and tagged by Fire Core before you can operate. These inspections will look primarily at placement, construction, and safety equipment. We are going to be checking for NFPA 160 compliance. Flame effects must be attended at all times by a sober and competent operator. If you have not submitted a safety plan which include operation plans, diagram that shows how the effect works and its layout, please contact fast(a)fireflyartscollective.org immediately. BURNABLE ART – All artists are expected to manage their own perimeters, including recruiting volunteers. All burnable art must be approved by Fire Core prior to burning. If you have not submitted a burn plan for your art piece, please contact fast(a)fireflyartscollective.org immediately. As always, TIKI TORCHES, PYROTECHNICS, and FIREWORKS are not allowed. This is strictly enforced. - If you must buy an unplanned parking pass at the gate, bring cash (*and prepare to be heckled for not doing it sooner. Buy online until 11:59pm Saturday.) - Cell/data signal is not consistent in VT; offline maps or paper directions are nice backups to have. - Ice, water, lunch, gasoline etc can be bought locally - if you come from Hwy 89 like most folks do, there is a general store with gas *just* before the Firefly road. Firefly Departure Checklist: - GTFO Hippies! Hope you left room in the car for your camp trash, ‘cause you’re not leaving it in the woods! Take a bath, check for ticks. 2) Look up before you pitch your tent Arrival sounds difficult, but is it also dangerous?! Perhaps. DPW and Work Weekenders have done a heroic job removing dangerous, fall-ready trees - more than ever this year. But nature is nature: so we also radically rely on each other to be alert for hazards. Look around before you camp; examine your surroundings for safety. If you see something sketchy and you can't tell if it might pose a risk to you (or an unwitting camper who arrives at 3am), get word to DPW for a consult. 3) Write down your volunteer shifts, why? If you don't show up for your volunteer shifts… someone else has to cover you, AND a kitten dies. Alarm clocks and watches help you know the time! 4) 911: Emergencies and Rangers Rangers are good people who roam the woods wearing khaki, and help community members through mediation/problem solving. They are not your Mom and they are not the police. They WILL engage emergency services for you if needed! If you are having an emergency you can reach a ranger through Channel 1 on the MURS radio and they will contact 911 and/or additional agencies as needed. Engaging someone with a radio is the FASTEST way to get emergency help at Firefly. (The bathing pool is still accessible from the top of Hydraulic at Porklandia/PBJ.) The road closure is protecting an active hawks’ nest with nestlings. Any human appearing in the hawk’s range is dangerous --not only because the hawk may attack you-- but also it could endanger the young hawks if they are disturbed, leave the nest too early, or are not cared for by the distracted mother. Better for humans and hawks to stay away from each other. The land itself is also unsafe because due to the nest, foresters were unable to clear hazardous trees. Observe the posted cordon and help others stay out. 7) Fire Conclave safety meetings Dates and times have been set for Fire Spinning Safety Meetings, which are required to spin in conclave. The area has been cordoned off - both to protect the hawk and its fledglings, AND to prevent participants from being attacked by the bird. Hawks are powerful raptors; they can and do attack, and this one has been screeching warning threats to anyone who approaches. Children, drunkards, or service animals could earn a new injury (or nickname) if they wander into the Cabana-Raptor zone. Birders, bring your binoculars! We could use some species identification and info on how far along the fledglings are. A nest viewing station or wildlife info project would be most welcome outside the cordon (tripod and scope? binoculars? duck blind?) ...this writer has no such expertise, but feel free to try us at info(a)fireflyartscollective.org if you seek coordination for your project, or to stump us with bird logistics questions. 3) Accessibility Squad needs YOU Hey Fireflies! This does not necessarily mean your request will be approved. We will inspect the location prior to the event to ensure it meets our safety standards. If you wish to spin in Conclave, you *must* attend one of two safety meetings during the event prior to the bug burn. During these meetings we will cover basic safety procedures as well as specific information regarding Conclave at Firefly. Work Weekend #2

Greetings Fireflies, I've returned from the north, and I have such sites to show you! There is a lot to digest in this email so I'll give you a quick TL:DR. 1. Work Weekend #2 and Placement are currently over capacity and sign-up is closed. If your camp needs representation for placement, email me at workweekend(a)fireflyartscollective.org 2. Because of the heavy winter and for everyone's safety, please no theme camp structure setup without approval from DPW or WW onsite; even if your camp has done so before. 3. Placement brunch will happen as planned; if you're only coming for placement please only send 1 representative per camp. 4. There is an active hawk's nest in Cabana Hammock. The area is cordoned off and it should be avoided. Long Form: As stated above, the winter and spring were particularly rough with our beloved event grounds this year. Many trees are down, others still need to come down, roads need to be repaired and this past weekend was hindered by the bridge needing to be rebuilt. DPW has already worked miracles getting the bridge finished and a lot of work done on the lumber, but tons more still needs to happen. Because of the predicted rain and the number of people, we've closed sign-ups for WW #2. Please do not show up without having signed up. If your camp needs representation for placement and you waited until the last minute to sign up, email me directly at workweekend@fireflyartscollect ive.org This year we have a hawk guest living in the tree-less ruins of what was once known as Cabana Hammock. An action plan is still being formed, but as of right now the area is roped off and should be avoided. Not only do we want to protect the nesting raptor, but new parents tend to be a bit touchy when hippies go wondering around under their kids. The best place to view the majestic bird of prey is from the Steam Bath area, where she can be seen landing in the distance. In years previous camps have been given some leeway to fly tarps and assemble difficult infrastructure like domes during the work weekends. Unfortunately this year that is complicated by how many trees are down and still need to come down and then cleaned up. Please consider alternative plans if your camp was going to put up infrastructure this weekend. If there are no other options, clear whatever work you are doing with DPW or WW lead first to make sure you won't be in DPW's way. Be aware that any infrastructure put up is the sole responsibility of the person putting it up, and things may need to come back down so that DPW can do it's work. Driving Reminder for Work Weekends, and for Firefly

Good day! Some quick reminders if you are driving: TLDR: 1. Do not drive to upper parking 2. Go slow! 5mph max! Longer version: You'll receive instructions for where to go, the address, which driveways to go into, etc. Please follow those instructions carefully. 1. Nobody should be driving up the second driveway that leads to the upper parking lot when they arrive. During work weekends, this area is *off limits*, we do not rent it out, and there are horses being trained in the area. If enough people drive up this road during work weekends, we could lose access to half of the land for Firefly. During the event, you must first enter the lower parking lot. So in essence, unless and until instructed to do so by a volunteer at the gate, DO NOT drive up to the upper parking lot. 2. The speed limit on the property is *5mph* no matter where you are or what you are driving. Speeds in excess of this raise dust, kick gravel off the road and scare wildlife and hippies alike.
