Interested in helping bring art to Firefly? Want to help choose what kind of projects are funded for the event? We've got a new round of grant applications coming in, which means we need another round of committee members! This is call out to any of you who might be interested in helping to review the proposals for Firefly's Art Grants this year! For each grant, we are looking for approx 12 folks who are interested in helping to make this aspect of Firefly successful. Requirements: - You must have attended at least 1 (one) previous Firefly in order to join and participate in the selection committee. - You must not be applying for a 2024 Firefly Art Grant. - You must sign the Art Grant Committee Code of Ethics. - Commit to reading and recording your thoughts on up to 20 applications, which may take 4-6 hours of brain time. - There are multiple blocks available; you can sign up for any number of blocks, but for each block you must attend both dates. Available Blocks: Temple Grant Meetings: - Thursday, Feb 15 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, Feb 22 at 7:30 PM Creativity (Early Application): - Thursday, Mar 7 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, Mar 14 at 7:30 PM Creativity (Second Round): - Thursday, Apr 11 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, Apr 18 at 7:30 PM Burner Exchange, Legacy: - Thursday, May 2 at 7:30 PM - Thursday, May 9 at 7:30 PM The Intense Details: The job requires a lot of reading and talking as we typically receive a number of applications for each grant. We will have 2 meetings in which we will make these decisions. These meetings generally run for about 2 hours, and will take place over Zoom. This is a commitment of about 8-12 hours; 6-8 hours of reading and cogitating and two 2-hour meetings where we hash it all out. You will have a few days between the deadline for submissions and the first meeting in order to read the applications over and fill out a review sheet to decide how well each application met the criteria. We review the applications for Thoughtfulness, Creativity, and Feasibility (explained in detail here and during the meetings). This is followed by the aforementioned meetings where we compare notes and formulate follow-up questions for all applicants. We wait a week to give time for artists to get their replies back to us, then we meet again and make our final decisions. This is a reminder that the deadline for Temple Grant applications is coming up, and so far, NO ONE HAS SUBMITTED ANYTHING! Your last chance to submit your proposals is the night of 2/11 (the portal closes at 2am). The Firefly 2024 Art Grants season has officially begun!

The Temple Grant is accepting submissions starting today: Temple Grant: up to $2000 The Temple Grant supports the creation of the Temple at Firefly Arts Festival each year. The Temple aims to satisfy both civic and spiritual needs by creating a revered gathering space at Firefly. While the Temple should be spiritual in a general sense (and true to the spirit of the event), it is not intended to be a religious symbol, and overtly religious tones should be avoided. The Temple is placed in the field, and provides a space for Fireflies to seek quiet contemplation and introspection at the event. It is of the utmost importance that the Temple defines a physical (and emotional) space; that said, it does not have to be a traditional shelter or building. It is traditional for the Temple to serve as a place for participants to leave offerings, and the structure will be burned on the final evening of the event. A single Temple Grant is awarded for up to $2000. Dear Fireflies, Earlier this spring we sent out our periodic open call for interest in joining the Board of Directors of Firefly Arts Collective. We received a number of enthusiastic responses, asked for and received thoughtful feedback from the Firefly Planning team, and invited several participants to meet with the current board and participate in 2023 event organization to better understand how we operate. We would now like to solicit community feedback on the current round of candidates under consideration for joining the Firefly Board via the survey linked below. We also welcome feedback on current board members, to help keep us accountable to our community. For the participants listed below, please consider the following thoughts as you write us: 1. Do you feel that the candidate or board member is well-suited for participating on the Board of Directors, based on your experience and board duties as described in our bylaws ( [ http://fireflyartscollective.org/about-fac/firefly-bylaws/ | http://fireflyartscollective.org/about-fac/firefly-bylaws/ ] )? 2. What are some qualities in the candidate or board member that would assure success as a member of the Firefly Board? 3. Remembering Dennis Zografos; Community Grief Resources

Remembering Dennis Zografos It is with heavy hearts we share that long-time participant, Art Cluster Lead, and Firefly Board member Dennis Zografos passed away at the age of 35 on August 4th 2023, at his home, after struggling for the past three years with an epilepsy diagnosis. A member of the Firefly community for more than a decade, Dennis created VJ, projection, and LED art at Firefly and beyond, founded theme camp Virtuality, and grew dedicated to the growth and management of Firefly’s art grant process, which quadrupled in budget during his time overseeing Art Grants. He became Art Cluster Lead in 2016, supervising and organizing all of Firefly’s formal art activities, and joined the Board of Directors in 2021. Over the past two years Dennis was enthusiastic about instigating and supporting plans for Firefly’s continued growth and maturity, including being instrumental to the creation this year of Nuthatch Collective to provide sustainable stewardship to part of the land that Firefly occupies for our yearly event. We will miss his energy and commitment to building upon what our community has created over the past 20 years, and seek to follow through with our collaborative plans in his memory. Community Grief Resources Our community has seen more than its share of pain this year: Dennis Zografos this last week, Ian Denhardt’s untimely passing on Burn Night, early art grant leader and former board member Sean Stevens’ ongoing battle with cancer, the loss of Rocio “Rossy” Elliott (Ranger Penguin) earlier this year, and other public and private challenges and sorrows.
