~*~ LEGACY / SKILLSHARE / BURNER EXCHANGE ART GRANTS ARE NOW OPEN! STILL ACCEPTING CREATIVITY GRANTS ~*~ Over the years, the Firefly Arts Collective (FAC) has been proud to provide grant support to Firefly artists to enable them to express and fulfill their varied creative visions. These grants are intended to support and promote radically-expressive, community-based, interactive and/or collaborative projects that help define and shape the creative core of the event. Art is a central part of Firefly, and the event wouldn't be the same without the wonderful pieces that have been brought to Vermont over the years. Bringing art is a great way to add a piece of yourself to the event and contribute/participate in a meaningful way. There are seven (7) different types of grants: Moonshot Grants [Closed] Temple Grant [Closed] Creativity Grants [Open, Early Application Closing: 2/16] Creativity Grants [Open, Second Round Closing: 3/15] Legacy Grants [Open, Closes 3/29] Burner Exchange Grants (BEX Grants) [Open, Closes 3/29] Skillshare Grants [Open, Closes 3/29] Smol Grants [TBA] The Creativity Grants are our primary grants, and are designed to fund creative new projects to be shared with our community during the Firefly event. Creativity grants are awarded in tiers of $150, $300, $599, $1000, $1500, $2000. NOTE: The Creativity Grant process is divided into two rounds. Artists who get their applications in by the first deadline will have their submissions judged first and, if accepted, will have their first checks soonest. Furthermore, those whose applications are not accepted during the first round will have an opportunity to revise their proposal and resubmit it for the second round! This process gives artists more time to create art, or the opportunity to refine their design and further address committee concerns. The BEX Grants are for art that already appeared either at a regional burn event or Burning Man, and showcases the local flavor of its origin. Grant money is intended to be applied to minor maintenance / improvements and shipping costs to Vermont. BEX Grants are awarded for up to $1000. The Legacy Grants are designed to support preexisting projects which have been previously awarded art grants from Firefly. These grants go towards maintenance, repairs, minor improvements, and so forth. Legacy grants are awarded in tiers of $100 and $300. The Skillshare Grants are a special type of grant, debuted in 2016, and allow artists to broaden or deepen their skillsets by funding specific classes or training in an artistic field. The Smol Grant is our lowest grant level, between $40 and $99, for artists whose ideas are big but whose budget is smol. Experimental Burn Sponsorship Program

Announcement and Call for Discussion Abstract: Firefly Arts Collective will organizationally and financially support experimental new Burn events growing out of the Firefly community. We are now requesting open discussion that will lead to formal proposals by motivated new leaders. We hope to receive proposals and make sponsorship decisions in late Summer 2020. We are currently accepting community feedback on the proposed questionnaire and decision process through March 2. Introduction Firefly’s mission is to foster a collaborative environment and community for participatory arts, encouraging people to express their creativity, and challenging them to extend their concept of both community and art. To that end, we recognize that Firefly’s July camping event is of a size and maturity that fundamentally limits the different ways in which we can experiment with changing values, prioritize new principles, and challenge community expectations. We wish to use our resources to foster new events that can do so, as part of the existing Firefly community or by spawning new communities entirely. Motivation Beyond the desire to further our mission as described above, Firefly Arts Collective also recognizes other inspirations for a bold experiment. We’ve long discussed the idea of having multiple events, both to manage capacity and to further engage the Firefly community. We’ve concluded that FAC doesn’t have the volunteer resources to do so; we’re exhausted from doing just one big event a year. Some participants have expressed that they would prefer a smaller event than what Firefly has become. As resources allow, Firefly will continue to grow as an event to support demand, but a new Burn can experiment with different sizes and formats. Some participants have expressed dissatisfaction with how Firefly is administratively organized, and wish to experiment with different structures. Some participants have concerns about stagnation in Firefly’s camping event, such as a yearly consistency in Camp Placement. Similarly, there are different opinions on what is appropriate in areas such as Sound, where experimentation at the Firefly event is difficult. Experimentation in a creative community is inherently valuable and should be encouraged. Firefly is itself an experiment, building on Burning Man and other similar projects, and some of the things we have learned can only be realized in new events that build upon older ones. Opportunity Firefly Arts Collective offers to sponsor and mentor any group that wishes to put on an alternate Burn event that grows out of the Firefly community. The level of engagement from Firefly Arts Collective is entirely at the option of the new event (or events), including but not limited to: Introductions to current landowners, local community representatives, and vendors (e.g. insurance, portable toilets, rental equipment, parking sites, buses, etc.) Use of current and coordination on future capital improvements that Firefly makes at the current event site, such as road maintenance, forestry, and the well. IT infrastructure, including personal email, mailing lists, websites, ticketing, grant management, and volunteering software. Access to resources that Firefly shares with other community events and organizations, such as operational knowledge and experience related to event timelines, the Firefly Conduct Committee, art grant process and infrastructure, and insurance and safety considerations. Representation as an Official Regional Event for Burning Man (via a Burning Man Regional Contact), should the new event wish to pursue this status and meet the necessary requirements. General advice on starting and operating a non-profit organization. Seed funding for event operation, and additional funding on successful execution. Guidelines We welcome proposals for new Burns and wish to foster experimentation and creativity, but offer some guidelines on what submissions are likely to be successful. These are not strict requirements — we will consider any proposal — but these should be considered as strong recommendations. A successful proposal should take strong inspiration from the Ten Principles of Burning Man <https://www.fireflyartscollective.org/what-is-firefly/10-principles/>. These are not strict rules, but a guiding social and cultural framework for the larger Burning Man community, and embodying these principles is a requirement for being an Official Regional Event. Working from these principles distinguishes Burns from superficially similar events. We welcome proposals that wish to vary from or expand their goals through changes and additions to these principles, and would like to see a thorough discussion of how and why this is desired. Event proposals should not operate on a for-profit basis, where revenue derived from the event directly benefits the producers of the event. Any revenue from the event should be reinvested in the community as a whole, and not benefit a camp, sub-community, or project. While proposals are not restricted from compensating organizers for their time, priority will be given to all-volunteer organizations. Proposals should plan to operate an event in a manner that complies with all applicable laws, permits, and regulations. Process This announcement is a call for public discussion about Firefly sponsorship for new events, so we can better understand what criteria are a priority to the Firefly community as part of a proposal and selection process. We invite you to take the time now to discuss this idea, identify other participants with similar experimental interests, and prepare to create proposals for the Firefly Board of Directors and greater Firefly community to consider. After community feedback, we will revise the questionnaire and open it for proposal applications. Once the application window closes received proposals will be published for community discussion, followed by an opportunity for revision, and then community discussion at an event scheduled during Firefly 2020. The community will then have the opportunity to vote on how well proposals match our decision criteria, and the Firefly Board will meet to discuss, decide funding and support, and finally announce the results of this process. Timeline February 3: Burn sponsorship program announcement, feedback opens March 2: Questionnaire feedback and criteria feedback closes March 16: Questionnaire opens for sponsorship proposals June 15: Questionnaire closes June 22: Proposals published for community discussion, community feedback on proposals open July 2 or 3: Community proposal presentation and discussion on Firefly Stage August 3: Community feedback closes Approximately August 31: Funding decisions announced

Newsletter needs a compiler; Join Communications Committee; Transport Core Co-leads and Bus Leaders; Sanctuary Co-leads; Fire Co-leads; Kitchen/Caffeine Co-leads; Placement Co-leads; Art Truck Co-Leads; 2019 Survey Results 1) Put Together the Glowbe Newsletter If you’ve always wanted to do marketing volunteer work for a non-profit art organization, here is your chance to join the Firefly Communications Committee. Our biggest need this year is compiling the Newsletter (Glowbe) and will take approximately 2 – 3 hours a month (more in June). The Glowbe (this thing you’re reading) needs a person to: Send 4 short Call-for-Articles emails (from existing template) to Planning and Festival Lists each month (more in June) Compile Articles from filled out forms via email and cut/paste into an existing Google Sheet in order to format and organize articles Answer any questions, via email, from Planning and Festival regarding Glowbe as well as reach out to article writers if you have questions regarding filled out forms Depending on your schedule, you will work with the planning list and come up with the best schedule to send Call-for-Articles emails and when to post Glowbe to the Announce List (only requirement is that Glowbe goes out twice a month till June when it can average 4 – 6 times) Post the Compiled Glowbe to the Announce List If you want, you can also add same articles (if applicable) to Official Facebook page and/or Website News Blog page It really helps if: you own a computer and have basic computer skills, typesetting skills, email organizational skills, google doc and sheet experience (or willing to learn). Co-leads are responsible for making sure the following essential elements of Sanctuary come together: Trainings for the Sanctuary volunteers, and an updated volunteer manual Timely and helpful responses to questions from the festival organizers and other volunteers A shift schedule and full shift coverage at the Festival The physical space of Sanctuary and the resources there Written up data and reflections after the Festival to facilitate process improvements As a co-lead you will have the guidance and support of Safety Leads Oryx and Zieve, as well as several previous Sanctuary co-leads including Zieve and Arlee. Arlee especially would love someone confident they could write the budget. The Fire Art Safety Leads are responsible for making sure the following essential elements of Fire Art Safety come together: Reviews of safety and inspection plans, including all art projects that use fire Assisting the Art Grant Selection Committee and Placement Core with any questions or concerns related to approval and placement of fire art Trainings for the Fire volunteers A shift schedule and full shift coverage at the Festival Timely and helpful responses to questions from the festival organizers and other volunteers Inspection of all fire art and fire pits, and responding to reports of un-inspected fire Written up data and reflections after the Festival to facilitate process improvements As a co-lead you will have the guidance and support of Safety Leads Oryx and Zieve. By the numbers: we brew around 40 pounds of coffee, 300+ cups of tea, 200+ cups of hot chocolate, and gallons of EmergenC. Seeking Grant Reviewers for Fire Art

Hi all – We need your help! Are you an experienced fire artist? Do you care about not burning the woods down? If yes, we need your help to bring fire art to Firefly! YOUR ROLE You will be responsible for reviewing art grants that include fire. You will represent Safety and determine whether a design and burn plan are sufficient and safe. You will provide feedback to artists on the safety of their plans and provide guidance to the Art Grant team about what we should fund. As Art Cluster Lead Dennis Zografos put it, "Art Grants fund awesome, potentially dangerous stuff and Safety tells us where we should draw the line". KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Right now, we are looking for someone to review art grants. If you're interested in taking a leadership role in onsite inspections etc. please reach out, but this particular task is pretty constrained. There are several rounds of art grants (last submission date is in late March). You would be responsible for reviewing some subset of these grants on behalf of Safety. HOW DO I PARTICIPATE? Firefly 2020 Art Grants: Temple & Moonshot Submissions Begin TODAY!

The Firefly 2020 Art Grants season has officially begun! Following last year's successful pilot, we are again launching Temple and Moonshot grant submissions in December (now!) to give artists maximum time to prepare their proposals and work on their projects. The following grants are accepting submissions starting *today*: *Temple Grant: up to $2000* The Temple Grant supports the creation of the Temple at Firefly Arts Festival each year. The Temple aims to satisfy both civic and spiritual needs by creating a revered gathering space at Firefly. While the Temple should be spiritual in a general sense (and true to the spirit of the event), it is not intended to be a religious symbol, and overtly religious tones should be avoided. The Temple is placed in the field, and provides a space for Fireflies to seek quiet contemplation and introspection at the event. It is of the utmost importance that the Temple defines a physical (and emotional) space; that said, it does not have to be a traditional shelter or building. It is traditional for the Temple to serve as a place for participants to leave offerings, and the structure will be burned on the final evening of the event. A single Temple Grant is awarded for up to $2000. Submissions Due: *01/31/2020* *Moonshot Grant: up to $5000* Have you had an idea that seems like it's just too much? Don't save your ambitions for the desert alone! Artists who have grand ambitions for Firefly art are welcome to propose their ideas for a large-scale Moonshot Grant.
